Thanks everybody for all of these wonderful comments!!!!
I'm so glad that you like my birds!!! Charm 1704 has been after me to put some eggs on here forever and I've been
dragging my feet. But, she convinced me to share some of the eggs since all the incubators were full.....so here I am!
I feel so dumb after looking at all the post, because I'm not a geneticist by any means. I'm just really lucky to be related
to somebody who has been trying to perfect the chocolate for a long time. I've been trying to talk her into giving up some
of the information on the birds, but she refuses to let go of too much information! Dang!
Anyway, she gave me the hens when I visited her at the beginning of this year. She had a whole fleet of them and wanted to
make room for the ones she was going to be using for her breeding program. So that's how I got the hens(just a few).
The hens carry the Dun which is not a stable color. She did tell me that the Dun is an allele of the Dominant White gene,
whereas it acts like Blue. Heterozygous Dun gives a darker Khaki color and homozygous Dun gives a Splash, which
will have varying white to dun markings and can fade to a very light milk chocolate color. You can see a clear picture
of this on the close-up shot of one of my hens.
I will tell you this on the 2 Roosters......I purchased them from a breeder in Georgia. She had hatched some eggs
from Korphus Kluckers. I in turn purchased the young cockerels from her. They were smut black when I purchased
them and they have continuously turned more chocolate as they age. So, seeing this I decided to see what I would
get if I covered my Dun Splash hens with them.
I also got a brother to these hens that is marked just as beautiful as the hens! I so want to try breeding him with
the girls also.....I believe I will produce Khaki then!
Like I said.....I'm not the professional here at breeding.....but my relative right now is a little upset with me.
She wanted to keep all of the breedings very low profile until she had mastered it. And here I go putting
eggs out for auction. But, I mean why waste eggs right? It's a gamble at what I may produce....I know that.
But, I've got more time than anything else, so I'm gonna go for it and see what I get.
Any advice would be appreciated right now.....because my relative aint talking....LOL She'll be okay though.
I think she's teaching me a lesson for my own good. She said, "Go ahead....see what you get".
Hmmm....that usually means I'm a dummy. So please discuss and let me know if you agree
with my relative or not. I can take it.....LOL I think?
Sorry I took so long to answer all your questions, but I'm under the gun to get everything ready to go in
the hospital tomorrow morning for some minor surgery. It's an outpatient thing. Don't worry....if I croak
....my husband can finish the auctions!!!!.......LOL
I've spent almost an hour trying to figure out this spacing thing on my post. When you write your reply to
a post it shows a wider margin and then when I submit it has my stuff chopped up. So I must have put in
returns when I wasn't supposed to....LOL Hope ya'll can make heads or tails out of this....LOL
