12 + Blue Barnevelder hatching eggs

As pictured Girl, Boy, Girl, Boy

Yay:) Good job with the incubation too:)

Girls generally have darker breasts either solid gray/tan or a narrower strip of light down. Sometimes there is a spot of grey in a lighter breast too.

Boys generally have a white breast or cream.

This just helps you to guess better. The blue line is not as accurate yet with breast down sexing and the splashes are too dilute to tell by breast down. By 3 weeks the boys start to look different with larger combs, less feathering and shorter wing/tail feathers. They can still fool you though so don't make any decisions too early, LOL.

BAD! I found a gal who sold Blue and Black Double Laced Barnevelders online ....... I ordered $192 =16 chicks ......... Looks like she gave me all boys except ONE!!!!

A person orders 16 chicks in hopes of getting half female and half males. Urgh.........

Trisha,

Just wanted to say thank you for the eggs. Your egg packing is beyond good, it's GREAT. The eggs are good size, uniform in color and shape. I appreciate the extras you sent me and I will let you know how the hatch goes.

Thank you again,

C.J.

Well
I have finished my hatch,, got eggs from many folks.. I had some serious incubating issues,, did not know if any would hatch,, I want to say your eggs were 100 % fertile and way outdone any other eggs I hatched,in this batch, fantastic! I still got 15 chicks out of your eggs, and they are my strongest chicks, even with some pipping in the wrong spot due to my forgetting to turn my turner back on at a critical time. And by the looks of it, I have a lot more girls then boys.
I want to say a huge, thankyou for awesome chicks/eggs

Question? When does the blue color really start to show, at what age and what's the % of them hatching without the blue? Appreciate your insight...Thank you, Diana

50% should be blue the way the genetics work out. But, the actual % can vary in smaller groups.

The blues pretty much look identical to black chicks at hatch. You can start to see blue coloring in the wing tips of the their first primary wing feathers. Check the wing tips at a few days old. That will give you your first guess at which are blue. Later you may have to wait until the chicks start really feathering out at 3+ weeks. Some may still fool you. I had a cockerel fool me until he was nearly 6 weeks. I thought he was black, but he was dark blue:)

I have 2 blue roos over black( pure barnie hens) and blue hens. I try to send more eggs from the black hens because they have better egg color and lacing which should help improve the next generation. So, most will hatch out 50% blue, 50% black. Some will hatch out 25% black, 50% blue and 25% splash.

Below is a pic showing the tiny bit of blue that starts to show at a few days old.

Can you see the tiny blue wing feathers showing on the wing tip?

Hi Trish,

I would like to join the band wagon of saying what a great job you do of packing. I bought 1 dozen barnvelders and 1 dozen blue barnvelders. You sent at least 18 of each and none were broken. They started hatching Sunday and so far I have 14 of each variety hatched. They are beautiful and strong little chicks. Thank you again. I wish all my shipped eggs were so wonderful.

Gail
