Make eggs, not war
Looks like a pullet. Not seeing pointy hackle or saddle feathers. Her size seems appropriate for a pullet. At 12 weeks I would expect to see a larger comb and waddles for a cockerel.

Thank you for this information! I hope eventually I’ll get real good at seeing these signs as well!I agree she is a beautiful pullet. Signs are pale comb, small comb and waddles. A young roo would normally have a redder comb at 12 weeks. Saddle feathers would be pointy, you may not see them yet at this age. With laced pattern coloring feathers can sometimes look pointy, but it is a trick of the eye. Your beauty has rounded feathers if you look closely.![]()
Thanks so much - all this info is very helpful!Looks like a pullet. Not seeing pointy hackle or saddle feathers. Her size seems appropriate for a pullet. At 12 weeks I would expect to see a larger comb and waddles for a cockerel.
Someone already mentioned the comb, wattles, and pointed saddle and hackle feathers. Also crowing vs egg laying. Posture and stance- Some hens will squat/lay while some roos will prefer to stand (though this is not always the case). Thanks so much everyone!! Can anyone give me reasons or the “signs” that point to her being a pullet? I’m trying to learn more about what traits to look for in chickens going forward because I’m having such a hard time distinguishing and understanding the telltale signs and differences in young chickens. Thank you all again!![]()
Oh wow he’s absolutely stunning! I definitely see the difference— thank you so much for sharing!!Someone already mentioned the comb, wattles, and pointed saddle and hackle feathers. What also helps, is looking up the breed and comparing pullets and cockerels.
This is my GLW roo (to give an example on differences.) One pic he's young and the other he's older. Hard to believe it's the same boy!
