12th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-Along

We have strong winds, and the power has gone out. It was only for a moment, but I didn’t even think about the incubator. It’s like a colicky baby. Once you know what to do, it’s not a worry. I have Hot Hands and towels, but I don’t think we would lose power for more than a few hours. Otherwise, I’d prepare by putting hot water in a carafe and travel mugs now.
Last night’s candle was pretty amusing as it looked like one had its bottom against the shell where the light was. Can we say, “male?”

In the same boat here. There's half a tree in the yard right now and I'm almost afraid to open the coops as my flock might blow away! We haven't had the power cut out or even threaten yet but I definitely wouldn't be surprised. I'm not too worried about the big incubator. There's only like 10 eggs in it (makes sense for a cabinet bator right?). I'm more concerned about the last remaining emu egg in the hova bator. The other two both started seeping in the past week so this one is my last hope. It's only half baked! I may make my husband drag out the generator if the power goes out lol

I checked the dog because surely he was bothered, right? Nope! He’s chasing the leaves. My flock is inside the coop, offended I won’t let them run out to the lilac bush.
I need to get a new battery for my generator, and then find the manual to learn to use it. Fortunately, I had it serviced. I know it works fine.
I am jealous of your property, but the few trees I have are not likely to fall, and the branches aren’t near the buildings. Good luck with your hatches and if you want to sell me an EE or poult or something...!!

Well, my incubator is warmed by a bulb and that bulb died last night. The temp went down to about 87 over 2-3 hours possibly off. Caught it and hopefully no major issue will happen from it. Back to normal 99-100 range now. Candling tonight most likely.

It sounds like it stayed in a safe range for a short period of time. I'm sure they will be just fine! Maybe just a tad later hatching if at all.

I have an internal debate occurring- help!

I had my silkie hen go broody for her first time ever. She's sitting on two infertile eggs (not 100% sure, will candle tonight and see) but pretty sure as all my boys are young and not showing signs of mounting any hens yet. She's been there for about 2 weeks...I was hoping she would give up and realize eating and exploring is way more fun but she has prevailed.

So the debate is...do I give her an egg from this hatch along from my incubator? I have enough id be ok giving her one, it is kind of on the right timeline as to when her infertile eggs would hatch she has been sitting on. I really didn't expect her to be a good broody momma the first time...but she is like a statue on that nest. I review the cameras every day and I haven't seen her out of that nest, to my knowledge. I would most likely fence her off from the rest of the silkies closer to hatch then maybe let her raise all the babies in her own little brooder if she is a good momma to the one.

Ive never had a broody hen but she's a lovey dove and would make a great mom Im sure!

Power's out...a tree fell across the road in front of our neighbor's house and took out the lines and split the top of a pole. Hopefully the township responds quickly. There's also another half a tree in the front yard now.

I would. Some of them act sulky when they hatch nothing. My goose got depressed a few days when her nest was flooded out.
