13 Week EE Injured (17 wks now) ~Vet Update Not Good~ *Graphic Pics *

Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of her from before. I'd been so busy trying to get things all situated with the duck house and pond and poultry run, that I hadn't taken time to take pics since they were really little and I wouldn't know which one she was from the young pics.

Thanks again for everyone's wonderful support!!

A couple thoughts....

Don't feel too bad about the outcome. It seems doubtful that she could ever have had a full recovery and must have been miserable.

Do speak to the vet about his error. Might save someone else from the same mistake. Frankly, I think you should get a refund.

Hav-a-hart traps are not expensive. Just go buy one. Or maybe a couple in different sizes.

I am inspired by the effort you put into nursing your bird. Not many would show such a dedication. Three cheers for Lolligee!

I do plan to call the vet. I was out most of the day today, so didn't get a chance. I'll let you all know what happens when I do.

I could get a trap myself, but the issue is that it's illegal here in Oregon to release them somewhere else. And, I'm just not sure that I could kill one myself. Of course, I suppose I'm technically not legal having the chickens either, so maybe that's what I should just do.

I'm not too worried about being legal or not by keeping my poultry. I remembered today (and drove past it) a house right smack in the middle of town with a chicken coop very obviously placed in their side yard. You can't miss it.

I've decided not to tell my son about the mistake the vet made...at least not for awhile. He was just too sad about the whole thing. I think it would just tear him up to know that the main reason we decided to let her go was false.

Thanks again for all your wonderful support. You're truly helping me through this.

It's just possible that the vet knew that the most humane thing was to let Jennifer go, and just gave the 'excessive temperature' judgement to give you a guiltless way out? It did seem towards the end of her ordeal, that she was showing new signs of infection, and her strength was already so compromised.
I think you did the right thing, and probably the vet did too.
I hope that wildlife rescue can come and claim your possum if you catch it. It is illegal in CA to transport them too. My Dad did it for years without getting caught. He did get caught once, and had to pay a $50 fine. He said it was worth it. He probably transported 50 of the little devils before then!
I hope that you can now enjoy setting up your ducks and spending time with your other chix!

I don't know, I would have preferred the truth. But I definitely say that you did the right thing Lolliegee, and I want you to know that we all love you and are supporting you.

You're right...I would have preferred the truth. Then I could have made the decision based on all the facts. I did feel like she was going down hill in the last few days, so maybe it was for the best. I just wish I had known the full truth.

My mother grew up in rural Arkansas; her family grew and hunted their own food. She says possums are pretty tasty.

They were intentionally introduced to the west and some believe it was as a easily captured source of food.

So...if you get a trap and catch one, maybe you should only transport it as far as the kirtchen.
