13 week olds sleep in a pile! ??

I have 21 6-8 week old chicks that sleep in a pile. I think it is normal since they are so young. But during the day they play king of the waterer. One will kinda jump/fly on top of their gallon waterer and start chirping. Then an influx of them kinda jump/fly and try to knock him off and take his place at the top. I was afraid that they were going to get hurt but they are having soo much fun doing it that I hate to try to stop them.

It is funny and they are at that ugly stage in life as well.
My wife said they are some ugly chickens. You should sell them and buy some more. I said that they are all ugly at that stage but will soon grow out of it. She said she sure hopes so.

What is the purpose of them roosting anyways? I have the roost avaliable if they want it, and I guess they will use it when they want!

I'm so happy I found this thread!! I came looking to find out why my 11 wk old girls sleep in a pile by the coop door. They don't use the roost inside the coop even though they love to walk up and roost on the tree limb inside their run.

I'll stop worrying now. They are sleeping, happy and healthy and if they want to dog-pile-it for sleeping, so be it

Mine too. They moved out to the coop a week and a half ago, stayed inside for a week, and used their perches just fine. Since I let them out into the run last Saturday, they seem to sleep in a pile by the chicken door. I don't think they are going into the coop until it is too dark to see the roosts. How am I supposed to motivate on building the droppings board when they're not even roosting? Oh well, they will figure it out. At least they've figured out how to get out of the rain....I have smart chickuns!

Yeah so most of my chickens have decided they like the roost, but i still have about 3 of them that pile together in the corner. The thing of that is, it is right under the roost so guess what happends to them at night, yup that is right they get poo'd on. Silly chickens. I guess God made them dumb so we wouldn't feel bad for eating them. I am not going to eat my chickens, they are for eggs i was just saying....
