13 wk mystic onyx - crowing hen??

So I got a mystic onyx from bomgaars a few months ago and while I was out checking on some chicks I placed with some broody hens, Miss Phoenix decided to show off her crow?? I read hens will crow too but now I’m curious about ya’ll opinions - hen or roo?

I think it's a cockerel. Do you see any pointed saddle and hackle feathers yet? They should be coming in about now.

Those are some pretty big waddles and comb. I can’t really tell if there is male specific feathers coming in but the crow and comb size at that age suggests male.

He's got some red patches coming in on his shoulders and some of those hackle feathers look suspiciously pointed to me. I'd pretty much guarantee it's a boy. I've seen some very pretty Mystic Onyx roosters, though.

Fair enough! I'm not upset about having a roo, it was just a surprise lol

Yeah that’s a dude. Nothing about him says otherwise. Even the way he’s standing in those photos. I would be interested to see what any offspring he has turn out like. What other breeds do you have?

"Yeah that's a dude" is my favorite response lol I have 3 chocolate opringtons, 2 black australorps, a new hampshire red and just got two little sapphire gems to give to a broody hen. but in august I got a bunch of others coming in (including another rooster, because he's going to need some backup...) I'm honestly really excited that she has turned out to be a he
