So I’m super bummed, out of the blue one of my buttercups passed away. The only sign she had was that morning, she was still in the coop when I let everyone out. I peeked in to see what was up, she seemed fine and hopped out running to meet the other hens. I later found her behind the coop, no signs of distress/no blood/bugs nothing. Vent was clean as a whistle.

Fast forward to a week later, letting the flock out today and now my second buttercup is all hunched up. She’s still eating, walking around with her brood mates. She’s got enough spunk that it took me a while to catch her. She looks in perfect health. Clean face, vent clean as a whistle, no bugs. I don’t know what the heck.. so I put her in a kennel with some nutri drench water and scrambled an egg for her. She doesn’t like being in the kennel so she’s still pretty amped up.

Any other tips or clues as to what happened? I have 14 chickens so I have no idea what her poop is like, hopefully I’ll see in the kennel.

The other two brood mates with her (the littles still bunk together in their own, while the rest of the flock stick together, this is all of their own doing) are super robust, energetic girls. Betty is usually very energetic, and was so yesterday. Just today noticing her slowing down a bit.

How old?
How long have they been in the coop/run they are in?
Photos of poop?
Any food moldy?
I'm sorry that one died, it's very hard to know what's going on sometimes.
If you lose this one, then having necropsy would give you answers.

Consider getting a fecal float to see if Coccidiosis and/or worms is an issue. Look her over for lice/mites and see that her crop is emptying.

Encourage her to drink well and eat.

14 weeks old, they have been out with the rest of the flock since 6 weeks.

No moldy food, fresh food each day. No poop, but as I said, I’m hoping to get some while she’s in the kennel. She’s clean, no bugs, clean vent.

I don’t know what a fecal float is, but I’ll look into that thank you!

Sorry this is way later. That pullet (Betty) is doing fine, had normal poop and perked up after that one day and has been well ever since.

My golden sex link, Audrey, on the other hand… one morning she was hanging out in the coop rather than wanting to be out with everyone else, and I saw teal/bright green colour on their bedding, just a little bit and it wasn’t poop, but a liquid that has since gone dry. Her vent was clean, no diarrhea (not even this teal coloured liquid was on her), no bugs, bright red healthy comb and wattle, clean healthy feathers, no runny eyes, discharge from nose, no nothing.. however later that evening she had passed. After some searching, I guess that teal stuff is a sign of organ failure? She had no prior symptoms, I know chickens are excellent at hiding things, but she was a vibrant, seemingly healthy young hen (15wks old) she ate and drank… I have no clue what would lead her to having random organ failure (if that was it) my sweet husband found her and buried her before I had a chance to tell him to put her in the fridge, since she is the second young hen to pass in a 1.5week period I was planning to send her to get a necropsy.

So good news is, Betty and Annie, so far, are doing great. I am absolutely stumped as to what happened to the other two.
