Hi....I have 2.5 month old chicks which are ready to go outside to coop...if the low at night is going to be in the 50's, do they still need a heat source?

Welcome to BYC! They're fine to go outside at this age with no heat source. Have you weaned them from the lamp?

Fully-feathered chicks -- normally they are feathered up between 4 and 6 weeks -- can be weaned off heat and sent outside.

What temperature have these chicks been kept at?

Oh...btw...at night it is in the mid 40's to low 50's....so they don't need a heat source at night? Ty

They are old and feathered enough to withstand into the low 40s.

I had 4-week-olds outside in those temperatures.

Though I will say that my Australorp crosses feathered up quickly.

I did wait until 6 weeks when I had some chicks with the slow-feathering gene.
