same as usual...add water! It's just the thermostat that's automatic...

There is not a special hole to add water through, although I know of people who use the vent hole on top and add tubing that goes down to the tray to add water.

As far as adjusting humidity goes, I find it best to start out small then add as needed. Some areas of the US are more humid than others so you would require less water than areas that are more dry.
