15th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-Along

I'd like to join in! This is the first year I could get some eggs early enough.

I set bantam gold laced Wyandotte and Belgian D'uccle eggs this morning, they should hatch April Fool's / Easter Monday!

What's the best day to candle for signs of life with Maran eggs? I have a pretty strong flashlight but it'll still be hard to tell with how dark some of these are.

Had to toss two quitters today. I just checked the few that were questionable when I candled on day seven. I’ll candle the rest tonight or tomorrow night. I find that it gets harder to candle as they fill the egg. This is the first time I’ve set eggs that were not from my own hens.

I don't have an answer for you, unfortunately. When I've incubated Marans eggs in the past, I just couldn't see anything in them at any point. Good luck with them!

Candled my batch today (Day 6!) So far, 19 of the 21 have embryos! One unfortunate death and another I'm not sure about. Looking forward to seeing how many hatch!

I’m on day 10, and I have 41 eggs going strong. The power went out a few days ago and was out all day. We had to hook up the generator. Thankfully it came back on before we went to bed.
I started with 45 eggs, and pulled 4 clears. I will candle again in a few days.

Had two more quitters last night. All of remainder seem active and strong. I’ll candle again on Saturday. Can’t wait to see how many lavenders I get. The eggs were labeled lavender and buff. I am wanting to add a couple lavender hens to my flock and maybe a cockerel for breeding.
