16 Deg. F and 30-40 MPH winds!

Nice coop! I have the same exact one except my doors open sideways:) I live in Southern MI and it gets too cold for me here so I figured if I was gonna enjoy my chickens, I wanted to be sure they were warm too. I put in a red heat lamp on a thermostat to keep the temp inside above 35 degrees. I haven't had any issues and have 6 chickens in the coop (bantams and standards). They have the option to stand by it or stay farther away.

I think you have a greater risk of damage if you close the vents than otherwise. dampness not cold is your bigges issue.

Thanks for all the support. I think the chickens will do fine also. Chookchick as for the vents, yes they are small. I think your advice of leaving them open is probably a good idea. In the summer I have the big door open for ventilation. It is critter proofed with hardware cloth.

Geez, that is cold! I'm miserable right now at 16 degrees, can't imagine being on the other side of zero! How do you guys stand it? Is this very common in Nebraska?

Be careful chicken mommas (and poppas) I had a close call with frostbite this week. I started noticing white on the combs, got a heat lamp on them and pretty soon the white started turning to black! Luckily I got the heat lamp in there soon enough. The black is fading and combs looking better everyday. I say better safe than sorry and put a heat lamp in coops when temps are single digits and below zero, especially for days on end. Once the blood can't flow through tissue, it is GONE! Yikes!

+2 degree in Des Moines, IA. This morning my young thai games was doing ok, I have 100 watts light bulb for them. Hopefully they will be ok tomorrow. The adult seems doing ok though
