16-mo old BO hen internal layer? update: Paris necropsy pics (graphic)

I think that I would open her beak and put a couple of drops in the lower. If you have any molasses or corn syrup try mixing it with water and give her a little. Pedialyte would be very similar. It helps stressed birds.

I do have molasses. She took some water, but didn't really go for the vitamins. She also ate another bite of egg. I'll try the vitamins in the lower beak, and then a little molasses.

well, that was positive. She took a couple drops of vitamins, and several pieces of scrambled egg mixed with molasses. She didn't get up while eating, however. I just turned the light out to let her rest. Her abdomen is noticeably bloated. Not sure if it is ascites, or problems with the egg making apparatus.

OMG... I am going thru the same thing with my one silkie. Except the blosted tummy. Hubby asked if I posted for advice, but I didn't. it's heart-wrenching,isn't it?
I have her inside. I thught it was because of the cold rain. I fashioned a tent with stools and a blanket by the heater to make her warm. I tried to get her to eat anything. I made a mash with crumbles, and some viatmins and a little sugar. and literally nudged her face in to it. yesterday she hardly had any. Tonight, I sat with her(him?) and she wouldn't eat unless I was petting her. and preferred the mash warmed. Eventually I added a little cat food to it but she really didnt eat much. she did take 2 steps, which is more than she has in 2 days.
Oh, I hope our chickies perk back up

How is your baby today??

My baby is newly sick. This thread is all from today. She is in a cage in the bathroom right now. She seems to like the scrambled egg in molasses. I am quite concerned about the bloated abdomen. That is not a good sign. However, she is getting up and walking occasionally. It sounds like you are not getting much of that. Hopefully we'll both see improvement tomorrow.

is the belly warm?(warmer then it should be?)

when she did do droppings..please describe in detail..color and consistency..

possibilities..

constipated/impacted..(best check that..a little oil might help.)
egg problem
ascites/fluid build up

keep the hen hydrated by drops on beak if she won't drink.. very important...may help make droppings and improve appetite.

did you get the no iron Poly-vi-sol?

give 3 drops for 3 days..2 drops for 3 days..1 drop for 3 days.

have you checked the legs for raised scales?
or feet for possible Bumblefoot?

I'd give the yogurt for sure..maybe mixed with cooked egg yolk and oatmeal.
she may need a calcium boost.

I am concerned about the swollen belly..could be EYP.
has she laid lately?

Well, my silkie is only 6 months old. I thought maybe eggbound, but I don't even know if it is female or not. And today we got the normal number of eggs, so if it is a girl, she isnt laying yet.
The swelling isn't good. My one girl I lost who was eggbound, I could kinda feel the egg. But it wasn't a swollen abdomen. In fact, she was a bit thin because she hadn't eaten.
Yours eating a little bit seems a good sign. The sugary molasses should give her energy, which is a good start. Walking is also good. The problem with chickens is they don't seem to show illness or pain, so we don't notice anything at first. They are a million times better than a man with a cold LOL

Oh, and it's the time thing... according to my computer, the posts were yesterday @ 9pm. I was forgetting I'm in tomorrow already

Hi Sammi, she has only had two droppings since I brought her inside. The first was pale yellow and runny. The second was small, but more normal green, with white, but still too runny.

Her abdomen does seem warm. I pick them up under their bellies quite often, so know what normal feels like. This is squishy and warm. Granted, she has very few feathers to buffer that warm feeling. I have wondered if she was hunkering down to keep warm. (We went from really warm weather to rainy and cool almost over night.)

I will make some oatmeal in a bit, and mix it with the yogurt. She ate about 2 -3 tablespoons of scrambled egg with molasses. She doesn't drink, unless I dribble it in her beak.

She has been molting for the last couple weeks. I didn't think she was laying because of that.

ETA -- what is EYP? Also, forgot to add, I did check her feet. They look good. No bumblefoot. Legs also look good.

Egg Yolk Peritonitis..it's when the egg laying is internal and the yolk forms a mass..sometimes it goes septic..
does her comb feel hot or hot under the wings?

could be she has an infection or just feeling bad due to molt..
give the vits and mix..
and have on hand some antibiotic for bacteria, such as Tylan, Penicillin,..
or check with the

here's the link for EYP...but it could be she is in molt and not laying. concerned about the yellow droppings..could be yolk..or bacteria.

Her comb is actually cool, and a little purple. The yellow color of her droppings could easily have been a yolk, but the color of a cooked yolk, not a raw, fresh one.ETA -- I looked at the link of droppings. None of them look like the one I saw.

She is asleep. It turned out the cat drinking fountain was keeping her awake. When I unplugged it, she immediately fell asleep. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
