16-mo old BO hen internal layer? update: Paris necropsy pics (graphic)

The Pen G I have is 300,000units/ml, and the recommended dosage is 3,000units/lb of body weight. 1ml (or cc) is enough for 100 lbs of body weight. Do I have a different Pen G than you were thinking? Assuming she weighs 5 lbs, which is about right, then she would need 0.05cc. Since the syringe is marked off in 0.1cc increments, that would be half an increment. True?

ETA -- I gave her a warm bath. Carefully cleaned out her vent. Got a little of the runny pale yellow stuff, and it behave like cooked yolk when it hit the water, like what you get in egg drop soup. (sorry, don't mean to ruin your appetite.) I also got some regular green poop. There was no shell, and no hard yolk pieces. I was probing really gently though. She grumbled a little, but not much. Now I would like to give her the injection, but really need to clarify the dose. I will PM you with this same information...

How's the nursing going?

I wonder if you could use a needle on a tube, like the tube on a bag of Ringer's without the bag, and drain the fliud more easily that way. Keeping the clamp on it in case blood starts to flow? Not the most sanitary of ideas, but it might be faster and easier.

thanks again for your info. I guess I don't have to pm you. The Pen G is for cattle, pigs, sheep, and horses. They didn't have any rated for poultry.

ETA -- I was just reading the label. This has Procaine in it. That wouldn't be compatible with use in poultry AT ALL. It could kill her, yes?

Orp, I added the link to First State..it is a 250 ml. Is that what yours is?

The pic on the FSV link has cows, horses, etc. It also has procaine. I used this on a hen with bumblefoot years ago and had no problems with it. I no longer have my bottle, as I threw it out either last year or the year before, but I'm thinking there is only one kind. Hopefully someone else knows for sure.

I looked at the link. It is the same. Penicillin G Procaine. It says it is okay for use in poultry. It doesn't say the concentration though. I suspect it is the same.

I use the Pen-G procaine stuff (which in this case, is fine)It's not the same as the "caine" painkillers. The regular dose is 1/2 cc, but when I'm dealing with this type infection, I use 3/4 -1 cc to hit it hard. Had two like this recently and now, they are bone thin, molting, etc, but the fluid in their abdomens is gone and they are more comfy, no longer purple in the combs.

Yes, she has gotten quite thin, and used to be one of the heavier birds. Her comb is much redder after the bath. Time for an injection...

I gave her the injection in her breast, but there wasn't much meat there. She is incredibly thin. Those feathers hide a lot.

I worried that I'd killed her because she immediately closed her eyes and flopped her head into my hand. but, she is breathing very softly. I have her wrapped in a towel in my arms right now. I think she is exhausted from the ordeal. Should I keep at it and try to drain the ascites, or let her rest a bit?

Personally, I would let her rest and see if this perks her up a bit by tomorrow that she can start holding her own. This injectable can show marked improvement rather quickly if she is not too far along. I will keep you and her in my thoughts. Maybe you can keep a dim light on for her to eat/drink at her leisure during this time.
