Don't worry, it must be your roo or another one crowing for dominance,,,

I have a 5 month old RIR. Yesterday and this morning I heard 2 crowing sounds that I think came from her/ him? Now I am really worried that she is a he. We can't have roos where I live and she is my little girls favorite one. Pictures are no help- the chicken looks like some pics of hens and some pics of roos. It does have some deep green tail feathers, but not a lot and not very long. It hasn't started laying though. But this seems really late to be figuring out that it's a rooster. DH says it's the most effeminate looking roo he's ever seen, if it is one. I have some silkie bantys that are about 2 1/2 months old that I am not sure of the gender, so there could be roos in there, but this sound was much deeper and bigger than I think they could make. Totally confused!

Unfortunately roos can wait quite a while to let their "roo-ness" be known. I know of several who waited until 5, 6, even 8 months old!

We have 12 hens about 15 weeks old. One started crowing two weeks ago so we traded it for a friends hen. This morning we are taking two more out to the country to trade. They aren't roosters. At least they don't look any different than the rest. What are we doing that makes them crow?

Two options that I know of:

1) You have roosters who up until this point were masquerading as hens.

2) Sometimes in a flock of all hens, a few will act as the rooster or guardian. They can even grow spurs, apparently, and you will most likely hear some crowing attempts!

Best of luck,

I can't wait to live in the country where it won't be a problem!! But that's our next house and I don't know how soon that will be.

It's funny to see them stand there in the crowd and make such a huge noise! EEERRERRRRRRRR! It's a real crow. No complaints from the neighbors yet, but I'm not going to chance it.
