Hello all,
I have one of 6 of our pullets with a major problem in her butt area.
They are from 16 to 18 weeks old and they started laying eggs about 2 weeks ago.
I noticed this one today as she was roosting away from the others.
I have searched about this problem and cannot find any answers.
Please help.

That is infected, it looks pretty bad. I'm not sure what's caused it. Keep it inside, you really don't want flies in that! I'm not sure what to do... Let me tag an expert...

Any advice, Kathy?

She looks like she was pecked in her vent area. I can't see her vent opening, but she could have had a prolapse. I would soak her bottom in warm water with either epsom salts, betadine, or dish soap added. Look for any maggots that could be in the wound and remove them with tweezers. Apply plain antibiotic ointment such as Neospoing twice a day. The soaks can be daily for a few days. Separate her, keep her away from flies, and watch for any bullying of others, which can occur with over crowding, not enough protein in the die, or with boredom. Getting them outside to free range may help.
