18 chickens lost today

I would definately seek restitution. I would price them at about $10/per bird. Good shooting, it's not the dogs fault but you had to do what you had to do.

Personally, $10.00 per chicken is an insult. When you add purchase cost or incubation cost, brooder, feed, mediciation if needed, housing, eggs and everything else you have invested, I feel even $100.00 per chicken isn't enough.

I get your point but the fact of the matter is if you took him to small claims court all the court will be interested in is how much will it cost you to replace the birds or what were they worth on the open market. My guess is that at any small animal auction $10 per hen would be about the limit and the auctions I have been at lately a rooster that sold for $2 was a great deal for the seller.

I am so sorry for your heartache.

Glad the "trainer" is/has taken responsibility for the whole horrible mess.

Yup, I agree, abuse.

I agree with this 100%...you are out the care and feed for six months before they lay, then the loss of income for the 15-18 dozen eggs/yr they will lay every year after that....and that is conservative. Now here's the kicker.....you are also out the TIME IT TOOK YOU to care for and feed them every day. Don't be so quick to just give away the time you spent raising your chickens....that's where the real investment is. If you don't believe me, try and find someone who has enough TIME.

I do agree that accepting the $10.00 per bird is rather low, but at least it is something. Now I'd love to be in on the conversation he had with the actual owner of the bird dog. Especially if the dog was valuable, with great blood lines. I do understand that some dogs are worth alot of money. How can he explain the death of a dog while he was on vacation? Not such a good trainer. I feel he has blown smoke for all the dog owners. His "kennel" is actually just several cages/dog runs put together and he had some dogs in a couple of his horse stalls. Again, not much of a trainer.
I will continue to watch out for the care needs of these dogs and I have the animal control number in my cell phone. I'm not afraid of calling in what I see.
Thanks guys for listening

Jan1,

Sorry to learn about the 18 dead chickens, what a loss! I have only 3, 9 week old Silkies that I have to really keep my eye on when they are out of their enclosure. So far I have shot (just my son's BB gun) at a Racoon @4 in the morning, stray cats that come into my yard, and crows that were dive bombing my birds. Have to watch out for screech owls and various raptors too. And I live in a city of over 2000,000 people ,never expected that I would have predators.
