I sort of thought because of the pointy feathers and the fact he was slower to mature than the other Easter Egger (the buff hen in the pics) that he was a roo. But, his comb is tiny, not so red, and he's quiet. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance - I really appreciate it!
I'm not sure. The only Ameracauna/Easter Egger I have is a hen, but she doesn't have as big a muff or pointy feathers like yours has, so it could be a breed thing or a gender thing at this point. She's never been very vocal either. Looks like there might be some SLW in the bloodlines somewhere, he/she is a beautiful bird!
That's a pullet. If you look closely at the very ends of the feathers that you think are pointed, you'll see that they are actually rounded. The color pattern on the feathers is very deceiving. She has nice even color/pattern where a roo will have patchier, bolder colors.
Thank you! I see now that her feathers are indeed more rounded than they seem. I'm very happy to hear this as in my neighborhood, I certainly can't keep a rooster. And I love Bandit's personality and beauty! Also, I'm thrilled to have a second EE for eggs.
That coloring fools a lot of folks who aren't familiar with easter eggers. The feathers look pointy but it's just the coloration, not the actual feather. You have a pullet.
