19 and a half weeks old and still no eggs :( egg countdown anyone??

Wow ok! Starting to feel better. LOL 35 weeks you patient lady you! hehe
haha well the funny thing is, the one that laid the egg yesterday and today, was going to be my thanksgiving turkey if you know what i mean! none were laying, and that particular hen was being the biggest bully to my precious americauna pullet. but since i got that egg yesterday, my pullet has been under the shade with the others, with no sign of aggression from Red! Its like she knew I had my sights set on her and decided to get to work!

Ducks are so cool, I love my Runners....I recommend them if you are looking for some different breeds, their upright stance is a hoot! They are sweet as can be too, I open the door and quack at them and they quack back. Turkeys, huh? Always wondered how turkeys would be to keep and how their personalities compare.....

I LOVE my ducks. They are just so dear. The runners look awesome, too. We will definitely get some of those in the spring. And I want some crested ducks -- they most adorable ducklings ever! We might have ducklings soon as Nelson has taken advantage of a second broody Barred Rock by putting a clutch of duck eggs under her. He was leaving them for the duck to sit on, but she isn't interested yet. I hope she gets serious about hatching some of her eggs in spring. Until then, we might have a few off season ducklings to keep warm. Maybe now Nelson will let me gather the duck eggs so I can make more pancakes.

We have a fresh set of turkey stories every single day. Today, a friend of my father came up to get some fire wood. Those turkeys followed him around puffing up and making all kinds of noise (and leaving GIANT poops on the patio). Dad says one of the turkey hens is squatting for him ... makes sense as Dad is the tallest, prettiest person on the farm. Turkeys are nothing if not vain. All day it is a beauty pageant in our yard. I wish my camera would capture the gorgeous coloring on their heads and necks ...

I wish, wish, wish these were heritage breed turkeys so we could keep them. But they are Broad Breasted Bronze birds, and they are having a harder and harder time getting around. They are mostly free-range, so they do better than most BB turkeys do, but still. I'm going to miss them SO much.

Funny!

Finally. We found egg #6 by the pond. Woohoo! While I wait for my chickens to lay- I have been enjoying my ducks eggs. I have 11 duck hens and I get 5 eggs a day. 6 are not laying yet. But today we got egg #6 by the pond- a little tiny egg. Must be a first egg for one of my duckies!

Is "Red" a Rhode Island? Perchance?

My Ginger AKA "Crockpot" was the nastiest little snot to my duck hens when I first put them together, she definately has the temper of my group, and mom and I threatened her plenty of times before she started laying...sometimes even twice a day now. And her attitude towards the ducks has lessened somewhat but she will still try to get anything away from them that they find, even if she doesn't really want it, even things she picks up and drops, if they find it she wants it back....she used to be a horrible food guard too, but they have learned to eat their breakfast and dinner before the chickens come back in to roost....smart little duckies.

Runners are a hoot....if you need someone to get them from, try Metzers...they were very friendly, their site is super easy and informative and the delivery arrived from Bay Area Cali to Boise alive and chipper! They will ship in as little as groups of 2 and they have tons of colors.

Turkeys would be fun! I have no room at this point in the city, I'm pushing our limit as it is.....but someday. Mom would love to raise her own Thanksgiving bird sometime, and I would love to just have a couple around for entertainment....I hear their eggs are good too.....is there a certain breed that is good as a pet/egg layer?

Have your ducks ever layed IN the pond? Leslie here was just telling me about some of her pond eggs....since Ivy is squatting I'm starting to take an interest in potential yard hidey-holes...it's a good thing it's not a big yard.....did your ducks squat too before laying? I never thought about a duck squatting until my mom said she swore she saw Ivy do it the other day, and Amiga says hers squat....It makes sense of course but I always just thought squatting was a chicken thing for some reason...

I am sure my ducks did lay in the pond for a spell. I was getting 3 eggs for the longest time it seemed like. So one day I started letting them out at 10 am instead of 8 am. I started getting more eggs INside the coop. I had to do an egg check last week because my ducks are plenty old enough to be laying. So my egg check is I kept them in until 3pm that day- in their coop. They had fresh water and a lettuce snack. No eggs. I will do another next week. I will likely do them weekly because I can never be sure if they are laying on the pond. I've never seen any floating. Today was the first time we ever spotted an egg on the shore...and it was very small. New egg small. So it must be duck hen #6 starting to lay.

I personally did not note mine squatting but to be fair- my ducks spend nearly their entire day on the pond. Most of the time when they come out to forage- I am in the house and only see their duck butts heading back into the pond.
