WELCOME FELLOW IDAHOAN! Rhoise on here is also from Idaho! You're close! Are they squatting and checking out the nests? Do they have big, fat, red combs and wattles? You would be surprised chickens generally handle cold better than heat. What will take it's toll on a chickens laying is the amount of daylight. Chickens need at least 13 hrs. of daylight to lay. I myself will be giving my girls the coming winter off...some people light their coops, but this will burn the birds out much faster. I'm bumed though because my ducks are younger than my chickens and aren't due to lay until late October/early November and there is a chance they will wait entirely until next Spring23 Weeks and still nothingI know its getting alot cooler at night that probably doesn't help.....
UGGH I have a bully bratt or two in my group as well!! so far managable but "Rhody" and "Gertie" may be living together in a seperate coop if they don't get with the program!! I'm gonna isolate them in a 350* oven!!!!Yeah, I've had that talk with mine hahahahaaaa! Especially my RIR, Ginger. She's nasty! While the others engaged in some dominance pecking when I first integrated my 2 ducks, they have mostly gotten things ironed out except her! She purposefully chases the poor things for sport! Unless I catch her and then chase her with the squirt bottle. Her new nickname is "Crockpot" because I keep threatening to cook her. Little demon!

Hee Hee I must be very rooster-ey When I get home from work all nine chicks come running and line up!My girls don't squat at all... even the ones that are laying. Maybe they just don't think I'm rooster-ey enough...![]()
I have 2 out of 11 laying so far,
I made the remark less than a day before I found my first eggs that I must have gotten defective chickens. They must have heard me.I went through the same thing. I posted and queried and my boyfriend joked that we had the world's only flock of 25 rare breed, no-egg-laying-chickens and then it happened. One day there was one, small, perfect egg. Then one day there was one more... until I as getting 5 eggs a day. Then the weather got hot here in Texas again and the egg production stopped. The only other key that I found was that the egg production began days after I put down a layer of DT. It may or may not be connected but I know tha tI had tried everything up to that point from the feed to the light to the oyster shell and worked exhaustively to make it happen. I don't think there are any accidents. If they're not laying, they're not ready... no matter how old they are... or there may be parasitic issues.
But... those issues aside... they will lay eggs. They can't hold them in forever![]()
My RIR is competitive, but I have other chickens are are meaner than her, by far. She does have an attitude, but I pick her up a lot and give her cuddles (whether she likes it or not, hehehe) Maybe it helps humble her?UGGH I have a bully bratt or two in my group as well!! so far managable but "Rhody" and "Gertie" may be living together in a seperate coop if they don't get with the program!! I don't use a light for mine in the winter. I had a BR pullet last winter that started laying in January and laid quite faithfully until a raccoon got her. Lousy varmint.WELCOME FELLOW IDAHOAN! It's funny you say rooster-ey enough, i read these posts about people chasing their chickens around and can't herd them in the pen when they need to, or bribe them with treats...Since my girls were a few weeks old i always just give them the stare and gentle step in the direction I want to drive them and they go!! I like to think of myself as a majestic Border Collie type hee hee, not Roostery!!!! hahahhaha The goofy girls won't let me cross the yard with out tripping because they throw themselves at my feet LOL LOL

I have two 2-month old Indian Runners and I'm excited for them to start. Maybe you or Nelson could answer some questions though...Do ducks generally start around the same age as chickens? If so that will put my girls the beginning of November (just in time for holiday baking! ) BUT, I hear that chickens need at least 13 hours of daylight to lay in the winter, is it the same with ducks? I'm thinking of a solar power light for the coop, but my ducks have a seperate house. What color will Runner ducks lay? I have one F+W and one black and they are gorgeous and sweet! Love my ducks, they are worth the bit of extra mess.
