My lovely Black mix Cochin pullet of 24 1/2 weeks laid her first egg this weekend while I was out of state. She has 2 sister brood mates that have not had their comb/wattles turn red yet, but hopefully they won't be very far behind.

The hens were born April 1st, so they are right at 5 months old. They've been squatting for about 2 weeks now. I got one egg this morning, tiny, pale brown....and here I thought Wyandotte's laid dark brown eggs.

I think this was the proud Mama, she seemed very intrigued by the egg when I found it. I gave her a big thank you!

Now how to get them to use these nesting boxes....I have a golf ball, wooden eggs, and porcelain eggs, and she still opted to lay her egg in the sandy run under the waterer....

Those first eggs seem bewildering to the girls. They seem to fall out of them where ever they happen to be at the time ("What was THAT?"). After a couple of times, mine went to the nest box ... some were shown, others following their sisters, I assume. I've even had a few who laid their first egg in the nest box! So, you might want to pick up her and her egg, place her in the nest box, and show her the egg ... with lots of praise and a treat for being such a good girl. I may be crazy, but it's worked for me.

Wonder if you have a brown egg layer if you need to put a brown decoy egg in or if the white golf ball i have in will work.? Anybody know?Mine have been laying a week and have used a nest twice ,the run and the coop wire floor.Put this new nest box in with a golf ball in it,they got in, kicked out the straw and left.

Oh no, I just figured out why my 30 week old maran hasn't laid yet- she's covered in bird lice, the poor baby!!!

I'm going to go get her some ivermectin today :(

CONGRATULATIONS YAYAYAYAYYAYAYAY!!!!!!
my theory is they are a bit confused those first few eggs sometimes, ours have been dropped from the roost or on the coop floor. You also just changed to sand in the coop, so maybe as such creatures of habit, she got a little thrown off and felt safer and quieter by the pool LOL........ maybe she was thinking water birth??

LOL maybe so! We'll see, I just went out and nailed some small roosts up to the nest boxes so they should have an easier time getting up there. Can't wait to see where the next egg(s) end up!

Just wanted to announce I got a double yolker this morning :D Same girl. She didn't lay yesterday, so I thought she might have a big one today. She has opted to lay in the doghouse instead of the nesting boxes

but, I think I'm okay with that. We don't have outside dogs anymore so it was just sitting out there, plus it's big and sheltered so maybe multiple girls can use it at the same time instead of fighting over who goes first haha
