19 and a half weeks old and still no eggs :( egg countdown anyone??

Sooo exciting! We got our first egg three days ago. Been waiting:p
So then today I heard the song kick in. Opened the back door which is squeaky, and then boom everybody staring at me. About 40 mins later I went outside with treats, and went to peek in the nest box and boom there is Gerty. Left her be then she came out 30mins later. I checked. no egg. So do they try but not produce? Or did I freek her out?

I think the one who layed for the first time today sat in the box for a little bit yesterday. The one that layed last Friday, I never noticed in the box, but she it was at least 45 minutes from the time I saw her in the box until I found the egg. I imagine the first egg takes longer.

hey Tin Flamingo ~ about 20 years ago, I lived in Fitchburg, MA... my neighbors, (I have forgotten their names...) but anyway... he invented the pink plastic lawn flamingo... he sold the idea to some company, wished he hadn't been so hasty, said if he had a nickel for every one sold, he'd be a very wealthy man... kind of peculiar folk tho'... she made all their clothes, which in itself is not peculiar... she made nice clothes... but what was a little strange was that she made matching outfits for both of them, and they dressed alike every single day.

I'll be back in the waiting game soon! I ordered 15 EE pullet chicks to be shipped on 12/3... I think I'm crazy to be brooding chicks over the winter, but eh... I really need more hens. I have 3 roos, 2 of which need harems of their own... so by ordering them now, they will be 5 months old in April, and ready to join the flock and their roos... it will be interesting to see how they group up, who goes to whom and so forth...

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

I had one that sang the song and played in the nest box for 6 days before laying her first egg. For all either of us knew, that first egg could have been laid any of the prior days based on her actions. She went in, messed the the shavings about and made a nest, then sat in it. She knew SOMETHING was up and the genetics told her she wanted to make the nest and sit though I'm sure she had NO idea why.

Collected our two eggs this morning. Went out after lunch, TWO more! Apparently 4 of the 8 are laying! Hubby is still asking for the Ee'ers, lol. Told him he has to be patient for those, they are the last. Only 1 of the 2 of them has even slightly squatted.

While participating in the black friday ritual I heard from my DH, egg two arrived via Gerty. She is our first layer. Hope Stella joins her soon.

How exciting! What a surprise to see so many eggs in one day :)

Only had 8 eggs today. Yesterday I had 9 and the day before 10. I've been paying attention to who is laying; most of the eggs are from my poulets instead of the 2yr old hens. Most of them are moulting!

I raise Heritage RIR's and find mine don't generally start to lay until at least 6-7 months of age. I don't know if it's just the RIR's make up, or, if mine are just wanting to take their time. When they do start to lay, though, be prepared for big, beautiful, brown eggs. :)

x 2 countrycatmom! my RIR's started at 6.5 months plus a couple of days... and both lay like champions, gorgeous brown eggs, everyday almost without fail. of all my chickens, the RIR's were first to lay.

my BR's are almost as consistent, yet their eggs are still quite small in comparison. the 2 EE's give me about 4-5 eggs a week each, and they are just as large as the RIR's

little Peach, the EE bantam, is now about 26 weeks, I've totally lost track, need to get the calendar out... she's getting much pinker, but she really doesn't squat. she might wait til Spring. one of her hatchmates laid her first egg at 19 weeks... hmmmmmm
