Had my first death of unknown causes. New hampshire hen just under a yr old. I'd checked on the girls 2-3 hrs earlier, one hen was sitting in a corner of the floor of their coop. I thought she was laying an egg.
Found her when I went to lock everyone in, in the same spot head extended and tillted down neck feathers fluffed, wings half manteled and 1 leg kicked back. Crop was mostly empty, abdomen was firm, could have been the cold. I decided to open her up and check. Found a Lot of fat(not unexpected) a loose egg membrane/uncalcefied shell found within the fat. Liver looked a little enflamed, could be blood pooling. Intestines looked normal.
Sorry no pictures were taken and the body has already been disposed of to avoid drawing in the coyotes.
Any ideas?
