I found the mama!
Came home from a TSC run for oyster shell & bedding straw and "caught" Amber in the same location as yesterday's egg, with Mr. Peabody guarding the pop-door for her.
Unfortunately, I somehow offended them, so they got up and left the coop, even after I promised that I hadn't seen anything.
While they were out, I installed the nest box partitions (they hadn't been used before hand, to discourage sleeping in them), laid new poultry dust & stall deoderizer, added a layer of pelletized bedding, a layer of shavings, and a layer of chopped straw to each new nest. While Amber & Mr. P investigated the new stuff, I went ahead and did a bit of a refresher on the rest of the coop bedding and added another layer of shavings. Closed all the access doors and told them to 'carry on'.
I got growled at by both of them.
20 minutes later, with NO announcements or singing, I noticed they had left the coop and went back to foraging in the backyard. I opened the nest-access door and.......nothing. All 3 nest boxes were untouched. I was thinking, "What the heck WERE y'all doing in there?", when I noticed the bedding under the roosting ladder by the clean-out door was all wonky, so I opened it and ........ BULLSEYE! Egg #2!
A smidge smaller than yesterday's, but I'm not complaining.
