here you go......
PLEEEEASE DON't put your Coturnix " in the yard with the big girls" !!

also...1 last comment and i'm done( maybe..) There is NO SUCH THING as a "giant pharoah " Coturnix ...nope. nope . nope.......that's like saying a" huge ,little " sized Coturnix....lol

Ahhhh... I'm just going by the limited amount of material I've read on the net. Honestly, I know as much about quail as I do about theoretical physics. I can handle chickens, but these popcorn-sized poofballs are something very new to me

But I adore them!

I do intend to let them forage outdoors in a huge, covered run, but why can't they be with chickens at all? And can they share the same large coop?

First...unless you have a run that is entirely 1/2 inch hardware cloth they probably wont survive very long.
Second....Chickens are CARRIERS of diseases that quail have NO RESISTANCE to and will frequently die from ( hence the quail wars comments...we have had MANY heated discussions on here about this. Seems the rule of thumb with chickens/quail contact is ...keep species at least 50 yards apart and use careful biosecurity procedures ( careful hands,clothes,feet/shoes sanitation,no cross contamination, handle quail before chickens, no co-habitation, etc....)
Third...Quail and Chicken do NOT have the same dietary requirements.Quail NEED 28-30% protein gamebird crumbles from hatch to death . UNMEDICATED.
i THINK i've covered it all.

I've often seen pictures on here of coops with chickens below, and quail in little pens above? And security of the pen isn't an issue at all - it's 1/4 and 1/2 inch hardware cloth on top, sides, and under the earth.
In fact, the woman that I bought them from kept her adult quail right next to her hens, in the same barn. I'll definitely look into this further!

Bill...............Shhhhhhhhhhhh! I've been jonesin' heavy for a quail fight. Seems like it's been awful quiet on the quail threads lately. Probably a good time for me to start a bunch of threads discussing my 3lb Egyptian White Butler A&M's.

ROFLMAO!!!

Oh just gonna say that if you offer the quail a large run and have a coop for them they will most likely stay in the run and not go in the coop and could possibly die of flood, freezing, too much heat exposure and many other things. If you plan on collecting the eggs then good luck because they lay any were they want too (which means not in nest boxes). You will have to worm them because they can pick up all sorts of parasites. They have more of a chance coming in contact with chickens through the wire,if you keep both chickens and quail in the same coop the chickens will most likely try eating them.Overall keep them on wire bottomed cages, you will be happier, and the quail will be happier.

I'd never leave them out at night - I only have 3 hens, and they're my pets, spoiled rotten and catered to from dawn til dusk. I can always make them a smaller run within the run, or next to it, so that egg collecting is easier. Do quail ever use ground nests?
I also have plenty of piperazine (for the cat and chickens, in the past) - one hen picked up gapeworm from the soil last year.
Also, I use horse pellet sawdust shavings for the hens, isn't that fine for the quail? I feel that keeping their feet on wire for their entire lives could lead to broken or deformed toes. It's an unnatural living environment, and I'd think it would stress them out.
