1st time using egg carton method and I've got pips!

You could use a small block of wood to prop it on the one side too; either would work.

Oh - Margaret - read my "Poor Miss Betty" post in the predator section...

Might not be able to send your eggs until Tuesday

Anyway, #2 is in the brooder and #3 is on its way out! They are starting to wake up now and that figures because we have a party to go to tonight. But, I feel better leaving them because the egg carton method is definitely working well.

I would keep an eye on her and make sure she eats and drinks, and that she doesn't stay off the eggs for hours on end once she starts in earnest. I'm always checking on my broody duck, and make sure she gets treats on the nest just like the other birds who are running around because I know she's going to be on that nest for another month yet. I really worry about her nutrition because my water birds free range with little tidbits here and there and I don't want her out foraging constantly.

I'm lways peeking at her nest when she gets off to eat--as though something will be visible ten days after a muscovy sits on her eggs.

Tuesday is fine.

I am pretty easy to work with! I know things can happen.
The block of wood is a good idea.

OK I think that I understand the egg carton method, but is it then on day 18 you just put it flat on the rack? I am trying this new method since the little eggys just wanted to roll around. I have a little block of wood under to prop them into a tilt. Any other words of wisdom that I need to know about???

Yes - day 18 you put it flat. Be sure when you put the eggs in the carton that the big ends are up. I'm not sure if you're supposed to or not, but I poked holes in the bottoms of the carton where each egg sits, just for ventilation.

This hatch definitely seems to be going better - I like the fact that they are not rolling into each other. #3 is out and #4 is on the way very soon with still lots more pips! (I've got 35 eggs in there).

Now DBF just called and will be in here an hour or so to go to the party. I REALLY don't want to go...would much prefer to stay home with my chickies

I waited all day for the action to really get going and now I'm going to miss it!

I just went down to take pics and the battery died...I must have left it on last time I downloaded pics - HOURS ago - oops! Charging now; must shower and hopefully I can take some before I go. If not, there will be PLENTY tomorrow!!!

ok - I'm back - here's pics of #1, 2, and 3 in the brooder with #4 and 5 getting ready. I take lousy pics...sorry...

AND, the good news is, it looks like it's going to storm so maybe we'll have to leave early after all!!!
