My hen, an EE, ( I think) is about 2-2.5 mos old. I got her from PBS. She seemed fine then yesterday my fiance and I woke up and went to do chicken chores and found her laying in the corner looking like she was dead. I hurriedly grabbed her and started examining. She weighed NOTHING and I couldn't feel her crop! She also had a dirty butt. I quickly got her into a shallow warm bath and got her butt clean. We wrapped her in a thick towel.and started to syringe Powerade (electrolytes) and spoon feed yogurt.

Fiance ran to store for vitamin drips for birds. We worked for HOURS to get electrolytes and yogurt into her. She loved the yogurt and electrolytes but fought on the drops so we began mixing those with the Powerade. After each she would.perk up a bit but quickly close her eyes and fall asleep. When she started to chatter at us we thought we had turned a corner. We didn't have much option so we stuck her in with the day olds to help her recover and see if she would actually eat and drink on her own. She is like crazy and her poos are normal as well.

She has perked up considerably but still is unable to stand and walk even though she tries. Sometimes she can't even stay laying upright. If uou pick her up and gently set her on her feet supporting her weight with your hand she does try to support herself. We have had very hot humid weather lately and I am thinking since all the others are fine that she was bottom hen and they were keeping her from eating and drinking. I came home from work and found her laying with her head in the auto waterer so we put her in a box in with the chicks to try and keep her more stable and less fall/moving.

How long will it take for her to recover? Will she recover? What else can I do to help her?

She hasn't been outside yet and PBS couldn't remember if they were vaccinated or not. Oh dear.... i dont know how to treat for botulism.

Thank God the rest of my flock is healthy!!! She is one if my favorites tho and nobody else is sick. Just her.

Botulism is caused by eating moldy feeds and will cause paralysis, often the neck is involved.

Mareks will come in on the wind or by wild birds, or even on your shoes. It strikes randomly usually, as many build up immunity to it.

I haven't had a chick not eat unless there was something else wrong with it. Hopefully she improves.

What is PBS?
How long have you actually had this girl?
The most important thing to do right now is get her hydrated while you try to figure out what caused it.

PBS is a large feed store. We have had her since she was just under a week old. She is eating and drinking like no tomorrow when awake now but still seems very weak and tires easily.
