2 Cayuga Girls & 1 Cayuga Drake

I can ask about it although the vet is off until Monday. I might be able to get a message to her though.

Dr Speer told her this is a common issue for birds & he actually made a joke out of it. It doesn’t appear as if she asked him any questions re at what point should everything be coming out.

It must be so stressful not knowing when it should start to come right.

It really is stressful. I don’t want our sweet & precious duck to suffer but she is suffering. I’m glad we have her on pain meds now but are they enough? I honestly have no idea.

Our vet is concerned it’s not going to come out. She truly thought it would start to come out by now but it hasn’t. She was floored when she was able to feel it because it’s rock solid.

How is she acting? I'd think if she was really in pain she'd be depressed. That's good they are letting her swim getting exercise is good for getting things moving too. As we all know.

She’s lethargic. I put her in one of our bathtubs last night so she could swim and she wasn’t enjoying it. As I said to my husband last night I don’t know how much longer we can keep this up because it isn’t fair to her. They’ve added pain meds but she sure doesn’t have quality of life. I wish our vet had asked the CA vet some questions but she didn’t. From what I understand their entire conversation was via email. I honestly don’t know what to do at this point.

Sounds like your going to have to decide what's best for her. Maybe after today if there isn't any movement at all in this blockage? Is she still drinking I know they are giving fluids. Still hoping for a miracle. Can you contact the CA vet yourself? Ask questions. What about an enema? Can that even be done on a duck? Ask for realistic expectations. How much longer can she live like this? Did they do blood work to check for an infection? What may have gotten her started on gorging on grit some kind of underlying problem would seen logical.

When I took her to the clinic this morning for drop off I spoke with the other vet & he said Mama was lively yesterday. She swam twice, was diving for pellets late in the day (only ate a few though) and was curious but not afraid of the dogs who were in the same general area. She was a completely different girl last night @ home & again this morning.

He said he feels Dr Speer has her on an aggressive SubQ plan as they’re giving Mama 5% of her body weight in fluids. He doesn’t think it would be safe to add more. He said one option might be to split it up into three different treatments per day although he doesn’t think that would necessarily help.

We’ve never stopped nor withheld Mama’s food. We have been trying dry pellets, pellets mixed with water, peaches, kale & dry mealworms. She’s really only been interested in taking dainty sips of water.

All of her fecal tests came back negative. Speer said at some point we could add a new med in the event she has an infection; either a primary one or a secondary one. Last yesterday afternoon we started the antibiotic to be on the
safe side.

This morning we talked about realistic expectations. I was open & upfront with him re my desire to not put Mama through more than she can handle. If she cannot survive this, if she doesn’t start pooping out the grit soon, then we need to be done for her sake.

We are going to reassess when I go back in three hours.
