2 Cayuga Girls & 1 Cayuga Drake

Animals bring me joy too. I think they teach us so much about unconditional love. We are blessed to have them. ❤️

Being a pet owner is definitely bittersweet. We all know the day will come when it’s time to say goodbye & it’s never easy nor does it become any easier. At least it hasn’t become any easier for me.

Losing them is so incredibly painful & I am so sorry you are going through this. It really is heartbreaking.

I have a Muscovy female who is 12 she is healthy but has arthritis I believe in her hip I have her on Glucosamine she is my oldest now of my ducks My gander is 12. then it goes from 8yrs to 6 months. I won't be hatching any more much to my bantams and Muscovy regret so we'll all be growing [older] together. ;)

Praying for Mama and ya'll too. :hugs

She’s TWELVE YEARS OLD?! You also have a TWELVE YEAR OLD gander?! Wow!!! That’s AMAZING!!! Then to have 8-year-olds too!! You are certainly doing everything right!!! ❤️❤️❤️

We met with the vet this morning, he gave us a tutorial on giving Mama meds, and he shared something he hadn’t told me yesterday. On the first XRay, which was Monday, the mass went from Mama’s crop (different from what the other vet said) all the way down. When he took another X-ray yesterday it appeared that the mass has moved into a newly created sac & that’s why food has been able to pass through.

He said she seems happy, healthy and is eating well so it’s possible she can continue on like this. The concern with letting her go back with her buddies is that if she starts to eat straw then the issue could become even greater.

I asked if they can reach out to Dr Speer again on Monday, sharing the new XRay, and see what he thinks & the vet said they would.

Her weight has remained stable.

This is amazing. I hope Dr. Speer has more information on Monday. Do you think y’all can do meds now? I never though In a million years I’d be giving liquid and solid meds to my birds I have done it with our dogs at times but those little mouths and throats on the birds is defiantly different. But you do what you have to. That is great here right has remained stable. Our spring that we use to water our birds pool buckets etc has a problem we’ll be looking for today but mean time I gave everyone the cement tub to play in the geese filled it up . Everyone else has to wait their turn.

I was really surprised but happy to hear her weight had remained the same. Amazing!

I did take her out to see her friends but it was an awful experience. At first they ran from her and then they started to attack her. Then Gilbert & Sassy started to attack each other.

I took Mama in as soon as she started to eat straw. I had hoped we could sit out there for an hour but we were only there for maybe a half hour. She’s back in the house pouting & her siblings are outside quacking angrily.

I’m sorry about your spring but I sure hope you can get it working properly again. How wonderful you were able to give everyone time to play in a tub though. They sure do like playing in the water!

Your “babies” are so precious!!! ❤️

What are the temps like where you are?

Low 30’s here in the mountains of western NC 50’s daytime. Where are you and your temps? That’s sad about the time with everyone and it didn’t go good. They know something is wrong. That’s so strange she started eating the straw.

The study mentioned above was human research. The bezoars had formed around fruit pips and other plant matter. Three litres of cola always made a difference and sometimes solved the problem completely: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2682243/
Who knows what cola does to ducks, though?

I did ask the vet about using cola as an enema, and I shared your posts with him, but he said he would be concerned using a carbonated product on Mama. He also said the situation is slightly different now that the blockage has moved into a sac.

Thank you for sharing this with me! I was really hoping it would work

Ahh...you live in a beautiful place too! :) We’re in SW MT. Our temps are all over the board but today it’s 40s during the day & 20s @ night.
I felt awful re how things went. Mama was so excited to see her friends so I think their reaction caught her off guard. She was hunched the whole time we were in with the others. She never stood tall & strong. It made me so sad.
As to the straw all three nibble on it. Is that unusual for ducks?
