2 Crazies setting Buckeye eggs today--anyone want to join?

I'm in lockdown! 10 Buckeyes out of 26, and 18 BBS Orps out of 30 made it to this point! Sure hope they all hatch!

Nearing the finish line now!

You're close now! My Day 20 on the Rocks and Ameraucanas starts at 6 p.m. today. I've seen some rocking on a couple, but wow, my sinuses are really having fits with this weather front that is marching through. Hope I can stay awake when the pipping starts! I tried to quilt for a bit and my fingers were tingling, then got a headache, then my glasses came apart and I think I just need a nap.
Best of luck on these, you guys.

I am on lockdown as of this morning.I actually already had a pip when putting the eggs in the hatcher but the RIR's are actually on day 19.I have 8 buckeyes from Laura Hagarty and 7 rosecomb RIR's from Dick Hortsman.Kathy I hate your buckeyes didnt do better. That is my worst percentage by far of any of my shipped buckeyes.Lets hope all these eggs hatch.

James, I think part of the problem is the Pony Express. It always takes a day longer for eggs from Georgia to get here.

Then, maybe because I washed off the dirty ones, too? That may have influenced the poor results as well, I imagine.

Here's hoping these all hatch!

I alway wonder about washing them.We have had nothing but a rainy mess this winter. It has been relentless.Hey Chipper did you wash the eggs you got from me? They were a little dirty too.I have been trying to keep the next boxes clean but they are still getting some dirt on them.

I've been struggling with mud too, you're not alone. It's one of the drawbacks of letting them day range. I have several cartons of eggs that were just too dirty to ship, I'm going to wash them and set them myself, as I hate to toss them!

I am contemplating getting a truckload of sand to put around the door of the coop, not sure how that will work though.

I would love to try another dozen, James. My goal was to have at least a dozen Buckeyes to start with. I figured 50% hatch from the 2 dozen would be 12. Then I figured 50 - 50 male and female ration would get me a half dozen layers. That was my thinking, anyway.

Ya know, I read somewhere that someone uses something to wash their eggs with before hatching, and has good hatches. I don't remember what though. I'm sure it isn't Oxine, because the label on that says for eggs that are going to be consumed, it says nothing about hatching eggs. I'll see if I can find that thread, that I read it in. I dunno, maybe that would help? I'm open to suggestions!

Yes, I did wash my eggs before I set them.I used warm water and a soft micro fiber towel.I was very gentle as I always try to leave as much bloom on the egg as I can.
Then again,I have had good hatches without washing the eggs at all, except for a couple really dirty ones.

I am sure Kathy knew to be easy when she washed her eggs also.Personally I think the Pony Express had alot to do with it,after reading Kathy's post.

One thing I do not do that many other people do is let my eggs rest for 12-24 hours after I receive them in the mail.I figure that in many cases the eggs are already old enough by the time I get them.
In cold weather mine set for about 4 hours to get close to room temperature and then in the bator they go.

I agree with the pony express doing a number on Kathy's eggs but I will send her some more because I really want her to have some of these awesome birds..I always wash my eggs just about the same way you did Chipper and I also never wait 12 to 24 hours.I usually wait 4-6 hour just to adjust to the climite change.I bought a ton of eggs last year and most of them did pretty good.I have not bought but a few batches of eggs this year as I am trying to concentrate on the heritage breeds that I have and try to improve them.

Oh stars I can't believe we're here already. I actually don't have mine in yet. I am still getting things tweaked in the bator. Almost there. Last count I had seven out of 16 although two were cracked on arrival.
The more I think about it the more I am going to blame some of the clears on the weather. One of the eggs had a dent, but the other one was cracked horizontally across the egg.
I think the only was that such a clean crack could happen was it froze (?) Maybe in the coop or maybe along the route...

I still have to candle and see what has made it to lockdown. First I need to check the bator. I needed to up the humidity a bit.
