Wow Lucy! You look amazing!!! I shaved my head when i was in high school for St Baldricks, I may have lost my date for prom but i made a lot of people very happy and i would do it again in a heartbeat!!

I'm trying... My kids loved it when they saw me tonight, my little girl kept saying, Momma you look so pretty and your eyes look even bigger now
smile.png

I will get used to it and probably love it even more than I did when it was long..
awww that was so sweet! and short hair is so easy!!!

I am considering the silkies and bantom Americauna for my byc project. Since my traumatic experience years ago with the larger birds biting, pecking, clawing, and trying to rip my throat out and blind me with their talons and beaks, I want to stay small and timid if possible. The city code here allows up to 5 hens and no roosters after they reach 6 mons. Attwoods will be getting chicks in a few weeks but they don't have much variety.
I can't grow them in the incubator, I am not that brave yet. That takes real guts as we witnessed here on the Duck Chronicals.
I am told Silkies are hard to raise? Husband says chickens that look like furry little bunnies can't lay large enough eggs to make a decent omelet.
Getting the coop at Atwoods too, as hubby's first attempt at making one turned into firewood after closing the door for the first time.
I have to have good layers with sweet dispositions.
You ladies have the knowledge and experience that can't be found in books. My degree is in law, not in raising birds, so any advice or opinions will be greatly appreciated.
I want them large enough for medium eggs and small enough that I can defend myself against them if they decide to rebel and go on the attack and try to scratch out my eyeballs with those talons.
Yes, I am a victim and survivor of my own flock of ducks, geese, RIR chickens and a peacock turning on me and trying to kill me. I am sure it was the mean one eyed RIR rooster that instigated the attack.
So any ideas you gals have on chicks that are good with small children and cowardly adults, would be a godsend as I haven't got a clue.
My dear friends, I beseech your kindness and knowledge in seeking nice birds.
NO Godzilla chickens. I don't want to have to wear riot gear just to feed them.
Help please!

bantam EE, i would hatch your own

I agree with Ravyn, try hatching! You will love it!

But as for chicks, my vote goes to bantam cochins. Nice size egg for a docile little beautiful bird. Plus, they don't move quite as fast as some others, because of their heavily feathered little legs, and fat round bodies.

LOL

@peepsiechix

This is one of my Ohiki hens... she just hatched 4 chicks... though she kinda growls a bit when I pet her, that's all she does... doesn't peck, kick, scratch or get aggressive in any way... :)

Raven, this is such a gorgeous bird and the chicks are some cutie pies!! Is this Ohiki breed bantom? She appears to be fairly small? And you hatched these yourself??
If you guys promise to help me through the process I might consider incubation, and it looks as if that might be the only way to actually get the breed I want. Your chickens are both beautiful and sweet! My little chicken I had a a hen that was a Bantom something and was a growler. I wasn't the least bit afraid of her and thought she was just purring like cats do when petted. How and where are the most reputable suppliers of the eggs? Who do you use?
LOVE the pics of your birds, thanks!!

@peepsiechix Hatching eggs is a very rewarding experience, and if you can do it, go for it! Just remember the percentage for males/females is about fifty-fifty, so if you can't keep roosters and can only have five hens, you're going to have to hatch around ten chicks and might not get the girls you want. You'll want to have a backup plan for that in advance.

We'll definitely be here for you!

DH got me a Brinsea Eco for Christmas that is going to be hatching out some Bantam eggs for me in about a month. Am I nervous about incubating. Well, yeah, but the folks here are fantastic and offer a lot of support and reassurance when it comes to incubating your own eggs. There are several support threads for incubating here on BYC along with the duck chronicles so you might want to check them out.

Folks there are very welcoming and knowledgeable, aren't they Rayvn Fallen?

Trust me Peepsiechix I'm a certified worry wart. If I can do it, so can you!

Lucy, those ducklings are growing like crazy. Pandora is going to be a beauty. Hope you are hanging in there and taking care of yourself.

You guys are the absolute BEST!! Now, I just have to figure out what breed and where to get those eggs from!

OH........the incubator setup will have to be considered as well. I've learned quite a bit just from the Duck Chronicles, like candling. Never heard of that before but I sure can understand why that is important.
I can't thank you guys enough for your input and feedback.

Ohiki are extremely short legged, longtail bantams... super soft feathers and great personalities... I have several colors and you can see more pics here...

I got mine all from minihorse927, originally, but I now have a large flock of them... if you want to hatch those, go ahead and get an incubator and get set up for heatching and when I have eggs, I can help you out, no problem... :)

And yes, I hatched most of these out myself, but also picked up a group of pullets from her as well... and even the broody hatched ones are super friendly...

Since everyone here is so understanding and sympathetic, I'm going to share some personal stupidity.

I have loved Ohiki's since the first time I saw them. I have only avoided them because of the long tails. Everything says not to put long-tail breeds with regular breeds.

So here's where my stupidity comes in -- I never let any of my breeds co-mingle.

Sad to report that the 6 pack is minus one :( went down to feed them and do a head count since I didn't get out of bed yesterday and sadly one was missing. I walked the pond twice, mustered up the energy and got into the canoe and paddled out to the Island, no baby there either..Not sure what happened, don't even want to imagine what happened or think about it. I'm so mad at myself for being to tired to take care of them like I know they need. I tried to get the remaining 5 to come out of the water so I could put them in the pin but they weren't having it. No more 6 pack
