Rupturing is when the tender skin around the umbilical attachment above what was the yolk sack breaks open. The longer the baby goes without stress on that area, the better it thickens and seals.
Today I was moving newly hatched chicks out of the hatcher to the brooder. I always wait until the last zipped chick has hatched. Even then, I may have to help a shrink wrapped baby or two, but this time I have a baby chick that hatched with the entire yolk sack on the outside. The tender sack broke as the chick struggled to move around the hatcher. I tied a thread around the umbilical opening to contain what yolk had been absorbed inside its belly. A drop of Nutridrench and in the ICU the baby is resting. An ICU is a styrofoam incubator warmed and ready for late hatch or weak babies to be watched and nurtured. I line the ICU with a recycled section of sweat pant fabric soft side up...easy to change out, rinse and launder...like old fashioned diapers.
