2 Hens with Matted Rears. Help!

Is she lethargic? Usually, chicks/chickens with Cocci are lethargic. Also, it's not near as common for them to get Cocci as adults as it when they are chicks. Is she still pooping bloody? Is there any way you could get a picture of her poop to post? It tells a lot. Here's a link that has pictures of several "normal" poops for reference:

It's not the poop that is bloody. It is her back end...feathers and it's just draining out the vent. The eggs are bloody. I will try to take pictures tomorrow. It is really raining right now and I couldn't do it this morning. I want to take pictures of the eggs and her rear.

I have a bigger problem now though. Most of my 14 hens layed on the ground today. All 13 were bloody or dirty...really dirty. The original hen is not bleeding and seems to be healing.

But I have another hen going through the same thing. Same as the first, yolk like substance draining and bloody. Now she is a bit lethargic. She has been sleeping infront of the door and today she has been on the highest perch all day. Comb is floppy to the right but very red and legs are yellow.

Still everyone of them is high spirited and they don't act sick!

We have stopped feeding corn. I didn't realize that my husband had fed corn yesterday morning. He has stopped. I really think the eggs they are laying are way too big. They are very large eggs! Could that be the problem and how do I fix that? I will get pictures...I'm sure that will help.

I don't know...I didn't realize this would be so complicated. I have taken care of herds of cattle and heads of horses. Oh and 3 kids. Not this complicated.

Yes, the can definitely be complicated. Hang in there, though. I can't think that the eggs are too big for ALL the chickens. Sometimes when they first begin laying, you'll see some blood-streaked eggs, but that typically does not last long. It is unusual (highly) to see blood dripping from the vent. And, it seems even more odd that there is more than one with this issue. This is an obvious indicator of disease, but I just don't know which one. Hopefully, someone will come along that knows. I'm so sorry you're having such problems...

I know I had a year where I lost several, it seemed like one thing after another. But I hung in there, and things (KNOCK WOOD!!) are going well now. So - keep at it, don't give up!

Ok. I took pictures. I hope this helps. I wanted to take pictures of the eggs...but my husband chose today to be on top of things. I'll get pictures of those tomorrow.

Pictures are on my "What's with the butts" page. I now have 4 total hens with this problem.

I have really enjoyed them. I missed farming and they bring me great comfort. I want to get this figured out...Maybe it will just be something flukey and I'll never know. Who knows.

I have pulled three of the hens from the flock and have them in the garage in pens. They are quiet and drinking. I have put them on finisher and will watch and see how they do.

RIR hen might have a yeast infection. Going to look into treating that.

Wish me luck.

I would isolate the most severe one completely from all other birds. The hens might be pecking at it already and making it worse. Poor baby. Good luck to you!
