2 week old chick has VERY red butt and is pecking at it

If you don't do anything at all, it will get necrotic or infected and die
Now is the time where you just have to do something, know what I mean?

If you noticed the chick is in pain after it falls off you should consider putting it down..... for the chicks sake.

I wonder if they were incubated at the wrong temperature? There is something terribly wrong to have that many chicks with those types of problems.

Enola, Yes there was a problem during incubation. On day 17 I came home to find the power had surged and tripped the breaker. My incubator had been off for a long time to the point where the eggs were cold. I literally cried because I thought I had lost all 17 of my babies but several people told me some still might hatch. This is my very first hatch so I had no idea what to expect/what problems I might run into.

Of the 17 eggs, the first 8 hatched perfectly. The next 3 had the tummy/butt problems, I hatched another good one after that, I've come home to find another good one and another pipped egg.

So I am actually very surprised with the overall success of this hatch since I expected them all to have frozen to death on day 17, but I currently have 13 hatched and one pipped. Not too shabby if a hatch rate. Today is also the end of day 21 so it is possible the other 3 May still hatch tomorrow or even the next day.

While I'm not shocked at there being a problem in this hatch due to the blunder on day 17, I for sure want to do all I can to save my chicks. I'm not raising chickens commercially or anything so I find no need to cull any of them just because they aren't perfect in some way. It would be different if they acted sick, weak, and were for sure miserable, but if they are walking around and energetic, I want to give it my all and do what I can to help these guys make it.

Looks like that Vetericyn might be the way to go for first attempt to get them better. I do have some iodine so until I can go to petco first thing tomorrow the iodine will have to do.

If I can avoid doing something painful like the dental floss thing (it just seems like it would really hurt the poor little guy), then I'll try the painless route first.

I think I'll also set up a separate mini brooder box just for them so I can get them out of that incubator. .... all the hatching has made it kind of gross in there. Really gross actually

And on that note, is there any way to do at least a semi cleaning on it fairly quickly and without messing up the progress of the remaining eggs? I don't want my remaining eggs (or chicks if anymore hatch) to catch any kind of infection from the incubator getting yucky

If you can't bring yourself to tie off the umbilicus, it would be better for the little chick to cull...necrotic umbilicus is not a pleasant thing to live through. Honestly, these guys that hatch this way don't have long to live if left that way. That's been my experience and those of my friends who hatch eggs that have had it happen.

The iodine/vetericyn treatments will be ideal for the other two, who just need to close up a bit more.

Too late for this hatch, but I put each egg in a muffin paper to stop all the gunk from falling into the bottom of the incubator. Once they have hatched I remove the muffin case and lay the chick on paper towel.
