I’m hoping someone can help. First time chicken mom. My 2 1/2 week old RIR has been laying down, hiding under the brooder and not coming out with the other chicks. I have six total. She can still walk and run. She’s not coming out to eat or drink unless I encourage her to by lifting up the brooder plate. She will then go get a drink and eat but because the other chicks are running around like crazy as soon as they push her or walk on her, she lays down and stops eating or drinking. She will drink from an eye dropper or eat in another area if I isolate her but during the day I’m pretty sure she just stays under the brooder all day. They all have vitamins and electrolytes in their water. I’m worried she’s not getting enough to eat or drink. Can anyone give me some other suggestions to try? She still seems bright eyed but not really growing. Her legs and vent all seem fine. I’m not sure what to do.

Electrolytes are not really good to give for more than a few days to all of the chicks, since they can cause runny poops. You can give vitamins though. For her Poultry NutriDrench might be helpful, given a couple of drops daily in her beak. I would take her aside several times a day, and try to get her eating some egg yolk and wet mushy feed with a lot of water. She could just be a weak chick that may not make it. But it is worth trying a little extra to get her eating and drinking. Is the brooder outside where it is cold, or inside?

Thank you so much for your reply! My brooder is inside. I’ll try the wet mushy food. I tried scrambled eggs but she was totally uninterested. I didn’t realize that about the electrolytes. I think I’m good temperature wise. I’ll keep trying with food and drink. She does do both on her own which is what confuses me because she’s strong enough to stand for that but lays down immediately if any other chicks push her around and quits eating or drinking.
