Just getting it ready. They won't be going out until 4-6 weeks when they are feathered out. They may need the heat once outside in lower than 70° temps.
If you've got power in the coop...Just getting it ready. They won't be going out until 4-6 weeks when they are feathered out.
Thank You I read that one before. Last year I integrated 4 week old, had (3) 3 year olds. Didn't have any problems. This time it should be better. 2 older ones have quit laying, so they are going to the freezer. One is laying every now and then she will be going to freezer in a couple of months (when it is time for these chicks to be let out of the run within the run).We wanted to give them a chance at another year, but their egg laying days are done/coming to a end.If you've got power in the coop...

I prefer they shed all that fuzz and first feather sheathing outside instead of in my house,Just rather wait until they have their feathers. Maybe a little fuzz left.
Have inside birds, use to cleaning dander & feathers, enclosures daily.I prefer they shed all that fuzz and first feather sheathing outside instead of in my house,
but it took me a couple batches of chicks to get there.
This is the chick run I am putting in the run. Set it up so I could put the foot of see but no touch fence on it. Going to put in the run tomorrow It has a roost bar that I will put at a foot. It has 2 side access doors. It worked great last year with the 4 week olds. Have time to get ready, but weather is to be nice this week so get it done before the cooler weather (50's) comes back.Mine will be three weeks. I will be turning the heat lamp off during the day and have it on at night only for another week.
The day I brought them home at a day old, they were roosting. I put the bar about 3 inches from the bottom.i moved them yesterday to a bigger area. The roist bar is higher up and they used it right away. I love watching these tiny creatures acting like big chickens.
