Was thinking about putting my 4, 2 week old RIR chicks out into their coop. Their brooder is just getting too small.
I live in the Black Hills of SD and it is pretty warm during the day. I usually do not have their heat lamp on during the day as it gets into the 90's.
I would have supplemental heat on at night but their enclosed portion of the coop retains heat pretty well.
What do ya'll think?

I would leave the heat lamp on at night. Basically a bigger brooder box outside! :)

I am of the opinion that anything that lets chickens act like chickens is swell. As long as you are able to maintain consistent heat throughout the night (85-90F for two-weekers) they will be fine. I find something like THIS to be VERY handy for monitoring temps in the coop and run.

I put my three-weekers out in the coop and they did just fine with me tweaking the dimmer-switch I had attached to the 250W red warming light to maintain a comfortable environment for the chicks. Once they are fully feathered (5-ish weeks) the warming light is coming out. BONUS: The light attracts bugs which is pretty much like having free pizza-delivery for the chickens!
