My two year old has developed (over the past two weeks) a thing about sleeping at night. He's crying for longer and longer at bedtime. Last night the cries were combined with "diaper" and "owie." No need for a diaper, but he's pulling his ear. He won't take medicine.
9 turns to 10, 12, and at 1 he's still up. At 1:30 he unloaded his stomach just as husband was going to take him for a drive. That was the only time he got sick.
Husband gave him to me at 2, he slept for 45 minutes and woke up screaming again. Sometime after 3, Husband put him in his crib where he stayed until 9:45 this morning.

I just had foot surgery and Husband just started grad school.

It appears that he'll cry it out until he physically makes himself sick.

Any ideas?

My guesses would be teething or ear infection. Since its lasted so long probably teething. Whenever any of my kids got teeth they wouldn't sleep at night or nap for a week or 2. Their ears can hurt while teething too.

Can you sneak tylenol in him before bed? Maybe in a drink?

My 19mth old just went through this for the past week. He never cried at bed time and was in bed by 7pm at the lasted. He's been up til after 10 and been waking up at night. His tooth finally broke through yesterday and he's starting to sleep alot better.

Do you just not understand that you are to understand when he says, "NO!" Who do you think you are to tell him how he's supposed to be. When he says, "NO!", he means NO! Don't tell him anything; he's right, and you're wrong. GET IT!?

My darling baby boy became a kid-from-hell one week before his second birthday and didn't become tolerable or worth keeping or having around or in the house until a week before his third birthday. Been there. Done that.

Edit BTW, he's 41 now, and I'm glad that I kept him until he turned three.

I would have his ears looked at. My 2 yr. old son was pulling at his ear a few months ago and he had an ear infection.

If he doesn't want to take the meds then have your DH hold him down and hold his mouth open and then you squirt it in - we have had to do this several times too. I finally found a flavor that my son likes to take now though and he will take it.

Hope he gets better - and you guys can get some sleep -

Maybe make him a little bed on the floor next to your own bed? My daughter suddenly started waking up in the night wanting to get into bed with us. I would take her back to bed and would try to sneak out once she was fast asleep. That kid had an uncanny way of knowing when I was heading back to bed and I went to unbelievable extremes to sneak out undetected. In the end, she would end up coming to bed with me and thus destroy any chance of me getting a decent sleep.

Anyway, a friend suggested the "little bed" next to our bed idea and that did the trick. We would wake up in the morning, and there she was lying in her "little bed". This went on for a number of weeks and then it stopped.

I know it isn't the same situation, but maybe he feels like he needs to be close to you.

I'm wondering if it's the crib. His brother got a big kid bed at this age, mostly because he was about to be a big brother and we needed the crib.
Hmm.

I know sometime between 2 and 3 they get their "3 year old molars", but where you are describing him pulling on his ear, that sounds like an ear infection to me. And infection can also cause him to be sick (as in vomiting). Perhaps calling the doctor is in order?

If your husband is able to get him to the doctor and they say there is nothing wrong, then I would guess he is asserting independence and testing boundaries, but check with the doctor's first. I really think he has an ear infection, based on your description.

my youngest was up in the middle of the night(she can't determine and tell me what's wrong, she's too young yet. ) anyway, she would puke one or two times and go back to sleep cuz she's so tired.. and she sleeps with us. but it woudl only be at night time.. and only a few times not real often, but it went on for two weeks, (with weird nasty poops) so the third weeks was coming on, and my FIL called me at work to tell me she's pooping and puking. and i went home, and took her to the docs. i didn't know what was wrong.. no ear pulling or touching or anything like that... but i explained what was happening a doc said, 'reflux'... and then he checked her ear, and sure nough, there was an ear infection too, which was causing the ear infections, puking, not sleeping and nasty nasty stinky poos. LOL. so, i went three weeks with a child who may have had an ear infection for that long. she was just crabby and didn't sleep as nice as before that.. we just got up from a three hour long nap.. so i think she's better
