My 2 year old olive egger has prolapsed her vent for the second time in 3 weeks. I was able to get it back in last time and she seemed to be doing better but now this morning she is back to the same again. I gave calcium have been doing epsom baths. This time she seems more weak, her comb is purple toward the back and shes extremely thin. She was still walking around eating with the other girls so I thought everything was OK. Today i offered her blueberries and she wouldnt take any. She was drinking but nothing else. I havent seen her poop. I have a flock of 12 hens. They are on Kalmbach 17% layer feed, get oyster shells freely, and supplemented with fresh fruits and veggies. They are in a run not free range because of Hawks and predators. They have been laying thin shell eggs and odd shaped last few weeks. I have one other olive egger, Thyme, who is also not laying and has been straining periodically. She is not prolapsed has a bit of whitish drainage but not as bad shape. The other 10 seem fine. Im not sure what could be wrong. I've not had any health issues since getting them 2 years ago. Any advice greatly appreciated

After her last soak these fleshy pieces came off. There is no odor, but the other hens has a very foul odor and I'm wondering is she has vent gleet and these aren't related.

Sorry to hear about your hen. Here is an article that is very helpful for prolapses by @azygous:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...ng-from-vent-prolapse-oh-my-what-to-do.76124/

I’m not sure what to make of the tissue besides that it could be mucus or egg white if an egg broke maybe?

For the prolapse, you will need to keep to moist with something like coconut oil while it is exposed. Try offering her electrolytes as she may loose a lot of fluid while prolapsed. Do you feel an egg stuck at all in the prolapsed tissue? What kind of calcium did you give her? She will need 400-600 mg of calcium plus d3 if you haven’t already provided her with some.

I’m sorry I don’t know much about vent gleet. One of the educators may be able to help @Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock

Thank you for the article. I will get some coconut oil right away thank you for that advice. I don't feel anything at all, and I was actually able to gently hold my hand against the tissue and the prolapse went in, but then she strained and it immediately came back out. I am giving her calcium citrate +d3. Its says its 400mg on the back of the bottle. Do I just do this once daily?

If she is straining, she may still have something that needs to come out, either egg or poop. But since the prolapse won’t stay in, she will need the tissue kept moist with coconut oil or even honey. You don’t want the tissue to dry up and end up dying. As the swelling subsides, it should go in on its own, but whatever is in there will need to come out. That is what the calcium plus d3 will help with. Yes, once daily for a few days, until the prolapse is in at least.

Thank you so much! I just ran out and put some oil on it.

Good advice from @alinas2010

The calcium is really important as is keeping the exposed tissue coated will oil, ointment or honey so it does not dry out.

Your other hens are having issues too? How much treats do they get?

If possible, take a sampling of poop to your vet to have a fecal float, see if they all need deworming.
