Darn it. Chicken math will get you every time.

I sold half my flock this week to someone who has a new farm and wanted laying hens. My reasoning was I already had too many eggs and wanted a second smaller flock so that when my first one molts I still have eggs (but not too many eggs).

So.....

I've already purchased 16 replacement chicks for my 10 sold pullets AND I'm getting another 8 speckled sussex next week.

That means my flock size went from 20 to 34. I guess if you count that chicks are physically smaller than pullets my total flock weight is less. But smaller? Nope.

Oh yeah! Same profound use of "chicken math" here! We had 13 girls all close to the same age. We decided we needed to have a staggered flock to keep egg production steady and not have them all getting old at the same time. A young fellow in the county was trying to rebuild his flock after a predator attack so we sold him 5 one year old girls. That gave us room to try some Speckled Sussex. We bought 4 of the Sussex chicks, plus 2 Buff Brahmas cause they were something different. That brought us back to the original number, plus 1. So far so good. Then we were at Orschlens Farm Supply and they had Welsummer chicks. We like the 2 Welsummers we have already and couldn't resist getting 3 of those chicks.

Now we're at our original number of 13 plus 1 plus 3. "Chicken Math" go figure!
