But on with the button talk

Here are just few pictures to share! More to come of course. (I had a bit of a mess in there today since I am moving cages around. Tiny feathers all over!)

My favourite lady of the current juvenile batch.

Juvie Tiny Tim...he is getting around better, but still look like a water bug out of the water at times.

Is this a Silver?? I Hope....

I am working on making a new setup for the buttons currently...with safety padding on the cage tops of course! If it outcome is glorious I'll let you know. Also, I want to get some better artificial lighting in there and on timers, too.

I wanted to let you guys know that I received both of the button books a couple days ago. I read The Chinese Painted Quail, Button Quail: Their Breeding and Care in one sitting and it was pretty good, but there was some questionable advice like adding salt to veggies since salt is already in the feed. It isn't healthy or safe to give them much salt is it? Another thing was the idea of housing them outside in cold weather...I wouldn't think they'd be comfortable in less than 50 degrees. Well, I am going to get going with A Closer look at "Button Quail"
next.

I will get more pics up -- promise!
You guys better share, too! I check other threads for new pics, but there are never enough!

Mrs. Fluffy Puffy --- I think they are dark blue faces, yes. I just posted two pics of what I think is my first silver chick? (<- a boy!) They are all so cute.... I know!

I have been trying hard to do new and better things for my buttons. Now I am trying to find out what game bird feed to give them. I have limited options out here...there are tiny expensive bags of Mana Pro and big 40 pound bags of Purina. I wish there were more to choose from. I will have to hunt around more.

shelleyd2008 -- deviled eggs are totally awesome! Quail ones would be neat I bet -- imagine button versions, lol!
That stinks that you are allergic to eggs...at least you can hatch them, yes. That is even better than eating them. Then you can eat the chicks from the incubator....just like an ez bake oven!
(j/k of course!

I agree...Darth Vader girls are sooooo pretty. I have one named Fatty Meat (Don't laugh...okay....you can laugh.) and she is a sweet heart.

I will update with pics on the little guy once he feathers out more -- it is hard to be patient. He was the biggest chick in the brooder and first to hatch!

I started out them already hatched actually. The woman that had them was somewhat crazy (like 7 kinds of crazy)...and it made me a might nervous, lol. But once I saw the button quails I couldn't resist staying to adopt some. She had adult male & female normals, red breasted(vaders), silvers, blue faced and cinnamons all crowded together, however. She told me this was fine and that I could do the same with mine. She also told me they were very broody birds and to feed them chicken feed. Anyhow, I ended up with 2 vader males (RIP Little Moe), 2 vader hens, 1 normal hen, 1 cinnamon male, 2 blue faced males and a silver hen (RIP Silvia) --Silvia passed away after becoming egg bound. Little Moe was the first to teach me about head bonking. I felt so terrible...but at least I've learned. I wish I could invent tiny helmets for them. Well, I raised them up with oyster shell, vitamins, greens, game bird feed and improved room to roam as they grew...and of course boink barriers. I later decided to breed them and purchased a Hova-bator Genesis. I am still working on improving their environment as I go.

My favourite thing about keeping buttons are the sounds they make. Howling, growling, wheeing and that odd cricket-like sound they make at night. I think it's funny when my girlfriend comes over and whistles at the single males "whee, whee, whee" and they howl at her. I have tried but can't even whistle much as it is.
