20 week old cockerel attacked almost 3 year old daughter

I know from reading up at BYC that certain breeds are more apt to produce psycho roos and I've read everything I could find on here about their psychology. Is it to be assumed, though, that any breed can produce psycho roos, however rare? For instance, with the various fluffmeister breeds; has anyone had, say, a Brahma roo that went postal on handlers? Any personal experiences? Still trying to prepare myself for my future flock. :)

You have a terrified and hurt three year old.... not a hard choice. Off with his head!

Hubby has off with their heads a roo that chased and tried spur my mama... she is a tinny woman. I dont do the off with their head but you can bet yer bottom dollar if one came at my mama or our grandson i would do it in a heartbeat If hubby wasnt around! No second thought or feelin bad bout it. Period. Ever. just a good chicken dinner.

Yes, certain breeds tend to be more docile than others, but bullies can happen anytime. A friend of mine had an overly aggressive Silkie - yup, a Silkie! Despite breed temperament standards, chickens are all individuals - much like people. The trick is finding the individual(s) that work for you and your flock!

Your child is in danger, and there's no way that situation should continue! There's also no way that any three year old can cope with a bird like this! Forget about 'retraining' because at best, he'll only respect the individual adult who copes with him best.
He'd be gone today if he lived here!
Rehoming a bird who attacks children is just wrong too.

A few months ago I drove about 80 miles r.t. to buy a purebred Black Copper Marans rooster (for $30) to replace the one I'd lost to what I assume was a hawk or fox. Last Saturday he went to a new home, after charging DW once & me 3 times. I've had my fill of aggressive roosters.

You said he escaped from the run, could you cover the run with bird netting to prevent him from escaping and free ranging? If he has no access to your daughter she would be safe. My coup is 10x12 open to a 12x12 run and it is covered for predictor protection. I sometimes enter my covered run and keep on eye on my Roo ( 14 wks )

Yeah! This is why I was trying to hook you up with a faverolle. I don't just keep them for the dapper beards, the only attacks iv'e seen have been on my christmas decorations and tomato cages.:) Iv'e heard brahmas are similar, but do know you can get a rotten boy with any breed.

No, it’s not a hard choice for me at all. I want him gone - as I’ve said many times in the last 18 hours since it’s happened. My husband is convinced that we can try to find a way to keep him and I merely just wanted to make sure that I was fully educated before just simply telling him no and hashing it out however necessary. I by no means would be able to kill him myself unless he was in the middle of attacking my children and it was the only way to stop him. I would just simply rehome him if my husband was just that adamant and ignorant.

We have never had a rooster let alone an aggressive one. We most definitely want one to protect our girls and to be able to fertilize and hatch our own eggs.

They soon will have zero access to our immediate back yard (we have over 9 acres at the home we just bought) because we are rereouting their run to dump into the goat corral which is about 2 acres for them to free range. The only issue with that is although I love that he will not be able to disrupt my children/family/friends, I don’t want to hatch ANY of his offspring.

... One of the cockerels is obviously more dominant and very recently started to get a little brave[er]... he jumped the fence... which I don’t typically care about.... as I was rounding up the... girls that got out [as well]... he... viciously attack... What I really want to know is if there’s any recovering from this...

Why aren't your chickens in a pen or run with a hawk proof or chicken proof covering.
In any case a 20 week old cockerel or stag is in no respect a typical rooster. Besides when you were herding pullets or hens this cockerel was looking at you as a possible threat to his harem. Roosters are forgiving in the extreme but they don't like folks monkeying with their girl friends. In all due respect the fault lies with you.
