Oh, dear, what is going on with these crazy women? I still have two birds who have been broody in the past that haven't gone broody this year, plus my Delawares are from broody stock, too, so who knows when any of them will go broody! Good luck to all of you with these nutty hens!
Yes I had two very broody Orp bantam girls that just dont know when to give up! For two and half months, they sat and sat and sat..... I dont know why but when the unexpected shipment of Spitz chicks from Ideal showed up, all 18 chicks could not be used so I sold half of them to another BYCer. So now they have seven chicks and they are good mommas. Not happy, still, with Ideal's mistake but at least they made good on their end by refunding 100 percent of my money back. Who could resist those CUTE chicks! Once the mommmas are weaning them, they will go depending on their hairdos and type. I would not be surprised if all of them are culled.
And right now I got an Amercuana hen that was broody at the same time as the Orps and then she decided to go broody again.
Currently I only have 2 broodies - Silkies. These two girls also set this spring and hatched 10 eggs together in April. Now they're sitting and will be getting more eggs - hopefully pure silkies
My third silkie hen tried to sit late spring/early summer, but I had to break her. One of my sebrights also wanted to set though she was a lot easier to break. That same sebright is confusing me now as she is making those motherly clucking noises when she walks yet, she's still laying.
I have 6 broodies sitting on nothing and 3 with chicks. This is the second go around for 5 of them since March. I have eggs in the incubator and I think I will divide up those chicks when they hatch.
I personally think mine go broody to get away from the randy roosters...
I love that they are hatching for me, but my broodies are driving me nuts!!
I still have 9-10 broodies in my bantam coop and 3 in my standard one. I had 6 in the standard coop, but 3 finally gave up. I swear some of them were/have been broody for 2-3 months each!
15 broodies does not leave many for egg laying! I was getting 22 eggs a day, now I am lucky to get 10. Maybe it will go up soon now that a few of the standards have given up. It was really hard collecting eggs there for awhile. The laying hens would squeeze in and lay their eggs in the broodies boxes, the broodies would add the eggs to their group and I would have to sort through every group of eggs, several times a day!
I think my broodies have their last batch of eggs for this year. They should hatch around July 12th. I have too many juvies and chicks growing out already. Me and the broodies need a break! It has been an interesting Spring though
Year of the broodies for me too, I have had 8 so far this year. I miss those dozen eggs a day sigh..... Right now I have 3 broodies raising chicks, one white leghorn bantam (pearl) 2 ee bantams (sage and saffron) they are only 8 months old so they are first time mommas and doing great so far. I don't need any more chicks either but they do sell quite well this time of year, now if i could just stop myself from picking the cutest ones to keep i'd be a happy camper lol
I've had 10 BBS Orps go Broody this year so far and 1 Light Brahma. I have 4 right now setting on air! Yup, 11 total!! Really is the year of the Broody for me.
