Well, I wasn't going to incubate any chicks at all this year, but the broodies demand their babies! I'm still trying to break up Tux, now that she's been sitting for 21 days on air.
I blocked off both the bottom nests where she's been alternating her brood time this morning while she was outside, which will make some of the others mad, but heck, she needs some time off the nest to snap out of this. Now, I have to go see if she commandeered one of the top nests.
Good news! Tux is cured! Two days in the dog kennel and she was trying to roost on her food bowl, so DH took her back to the main coop after dark and put her on the roost. She's not been in a nest since!
NOW, for the other news.....I have my #7 broody!
My black Orpington hen, Delilah, that we call DeDe, is broody. She is the daughter of Suede and my late hen, Velvet, and half sister to Glenda, who is raising babies right now. Since I still have two different hens with chicks plus my blue Orp hen, Dusty, sitting on Day 12 today, we're not giving her any eggs. Too many overlapping broodies and not enough places for them to go.
About time Tux! Congratz on breaking her, but unfortunate that you have ANOTHER one. I bet Delilah was waiting for Tux to give up so she could start
I got some pictures of my silkies. About 1 more week left!
This first one is Holly. She is a first time mom and doing so well! She doesn't peck much, but she make so much NOISE!
And these two are the 2nd Time mothers. Phoebe is on the left, Priscilla is on the right. Both are actually quiet, but for some reason they loathe sticks.
Wish mine would brood together like that! It'd make things so much easier. Right now, DeDe is just sitting and letting others lay eggs in the nest with her. She comes out in the a.m. with the others and gets off the nest once day in the afternoon so I'm just letting her sit. Too much going on to deal with that nutty woman. She's one who will take your face off if you get too close to her; most of my other broodies have been pretty sweet and cooperative.
I may be premature, but I have a RIR hen on the nest now, all spread out, at almost 8 p.m., highly unusual. She is one of my breeder quality girls who have broodiness still in their genes, so I may have my #8 broody since the end of February.
DH is already thinking we may want to build a broody house with separate little pens just for multiple broodies and their babies. Dusty is going into Day 18 tonight with hers.
