Is this considered good or bad karma?

Haven't checked on the RIR girl yet this morning. I have nowhere to put her so it doesn't matter. Never can break them up, it seems, so if she is broody, she'll be taking up another favorite nest in the coop. I just hope Dusty doesnt dump her babies at three weeks old like she did the last one. If she does, I'll have some chicks to sell ASAP.

Ugh.. well this is great.. I wake up this morning to find Holly, the first-time mother with half of her crest got and a big bald spot on her head! Along with some of her beard..

No blood, just bare skin. I was really hoping to take them to our County Fair this year, but the feathers won't grow back in time. The fair is in a couple weeks.

Good luck with your broodies! Broodies are wonderful, them and their chicks are one of the best things about chickens

I counted 9 broodies when I went into the coop yesterday. Unfortunately none of them can seem to remember what nestbox they were in!

I thought I was going to be able to keep the chicks my girls hatched but it's to crowded so I am going to try and sell them. This is my first experiance with broody's and chicks. The chicks are two weeks old now. I have someone interested in buying them. At what point and how do you take them away from mama hen without causing distress, especially in ME feeling guilty. Do I leave her with just one baby?

I left two broodies with one baby each awhile back. One mother (coincidentally my Dusty, whose current set of chicks are hatching right now) decided she didn't want that one, either. The other broody didn't want Dusty's lone baby so had to figure out what to do with it. The first time Glenda hatched babies, I sold them at a week old and she looked for them for months. It was so sad! This time, I'm letting her keep them awhile, though two of them are actually spoken for even now. May just keep the other two, provided they aren't cockerels.
Right now, Shadow has her chick, Fern, who is going on seven weeks old now. She still mothers her and doesn't seem to miss the two Orp babies she had that I sold, though, she does keep calling when I give her and Fern something, like she expects them to come back anytime.

I say we send all the broodies to a camp for the addicted to hatching! The Sissies need to give up the duck eggs and raise their little ones right now, and Duchess just needs to let everyone else sit on their own darn eggs! Then we need to get the ducks taken care of,, Hershey is back on eggs she stole from Midnight, Midnight is sitting on what was left and some of the Mallard hens eggs because she went bye bye last Thursday. In the coop we have Red, Fuzzy Butt, Butterscotch, Woo and Babette the duck sharing broody duties! I know I missed someone in there,, but this is outrageous!

Sounds like a broody circus at your place, Kate! I forgot to say that the RIR wasn't really broody. I think she was thinking that since Delilah got to stay on a cozy nest all night long, she ought to be allowed as well. When we removed her, she didn't go back, thank goodness!
