2011 POULTRY New Year's Resolutions

My List for 2011

1) Finish my coop and run addition

2) Add RIR, Buff Orpington, and Barred Rocks to my flock ( the eggs are in the mail and on their way to me now)

3) Do everything I can to give my flock the best life I can because they help to feed my family with more than just eggs and chicken.

I'm hoping to convince my husband that ordering only 4 more chickens this spring is silly....we only have 34...of which only 8 are roosters...

- Successfully grow and harvest PLENTY of non-GMO Corn, Quinoa, and Amaranth for the chickens and the household

- Enter my birds in at least TWO shows for the year

Since we are going to be moving to our 'forever farm' in March, I need to get a coop built quickly and I am hoping it will be larger than the one I have so, I can add some bantam Cochin, SLW and a few other breeds I would love to have. 2011 will be a lot of changes for me! Most will be great changes..

a) make of portable run for my 8 girls

b) Build a lion/bear/canine etc proof portable coop and run (tractor)

c) Raise two sets of female meat birds each summer for home consumption

d) convince my husband to start in meat rabbits +/- angoras

Great resolutions, everyone! It's nice to see how many people have ambitions for the upcoming year with our flocks. May all of our resolutions be fulfilled!

Oh, and another chicken-related resolution for me: Rescue and place as many spent laying hens as possible with my job! We already have a few rescues planned, but the more the better.
