2013 Sebastopol Breeding/Gosling Thread

It is funny to be walking along and uumm thats an egg. How are you doing Barb, and how are the birds all settling in?

-------side note------- so enjoying the breed specific threads that can be on topic only pertaining to that breed. Much nicer than general threads

Shellie I am doing the best I can after finding out I can not have knee surgery on my right knee. The bones are too brittle. Need more bone density but I can not take calcium builders due to being a dialysis patient. So the best we could do is put and wear a brace on my knee. The one the doctor put on me costs $93.00 and it swelled my leg up awful!!! I went to walmart and bought one that really works nicely for the knee costs $19.95. Hum something wrong in this picture of costs???

So far most of my girls are laying eggs with nice shapes to them and some with some good grams to them. Took out one at 199g but it was unfertile. But most are from 165g and up to 199g. I think that is wonderful. Good shells as well.

Have 5 fertile eggs in the incubator right now out of the 7 I put in. All from different nest. Today we took 13 more eggs 7 from the new girls a curly girl from Vicky and a smooth white from Kim;s lines and some from each of the other nests. I will wait a few days to let these eggs rest from out side before I candle them and check the eggs out and weigh them.

I have desposed of about 15 are more eggs. But most wre Sarina's and hers have not been fertile because I do not see any of my gander breeding her???

Check out miniscus (sp) injections in your knee, they made a world of difference for hubby. Noninvasive too and give cushion back where it was lost. Sorry you cant have the surgery that would likely correct it.

Odd no one is breeding Sarina, is she housed with one gander particular?

Congrats on the strong start from the others,

for good hatching this year for you

The doctor is going to put the chicken oil shot in my knee when they get it back in. They are totally out of it right now. My luck right. Suppose to call me when it gets in to them. I bet I have to call them instead. I sure hope we can find something to help this knee from rubbing bone and popping out of place all the time. Not easy to walk and get my chores done!

Thanks Shellie, I sure hope so this year.....
Shellie Sarina was with Spicie for awhile last year and he did not bred her. This year she was around Grant and Lance as well as Spicie none of them even gave her a second look.
She also has run with free range with Sammie he does not breed her, with Berrie and he does not breed her, Indie he does not breed her and even with Dillan and I am not sure if he tried or not.
I am not sure just why the ganders are not interested in her?????? She is a supper sweet goose except when you get near her eggs she becomes godzilla goose!!!
This is why I am letting her sit on the eggs she has in that nest whoever they belong too. She has sat on eggs for the last 2 years and no goslings. So I hope a couple hatch for her. But I will have to take them away so the predators do not get the goslings. Even with all the wire fencing we have extra around the kennels still do not trust the racoons and foxes around here. Or the dogs.....

I think next year I will put Sarina in a pen with a proven gander not sure who yet???? Grant seems to want no one but Samantha who he almost killed Sammie when he first took Samantha away from Sammie. Since that time he does not leave her side even throughout summer and fall!

I would guess if line of sight is blocked and No one else is available then the gander would eventually breed her.

In the pens we have which is big dog kennels, we divided them with a thin pannel board so the geese do not fight with each other. Did this in two different pens so we have 6 divided spaces. So pretty much the ganders view is blocked. plus we also have 2 other dog kennels we can use right now that are empty. So we have plenty of room to seperate the geese.

Do you have a pair or solo gander you want her with? Not today since you are knee deep in snow, but when you can maybe split her out with the gander of choice or the pair of choice so this season isnt a total loss of her eggs for you. Is she your lavender? (cant remember off the top of my head right now)

No, Sarina is my white girl I got about 3 years ago as a gosling from Vicky. She carries SB.
Sarina went broody on the eggs laid in the one nest where I believe either Samantha or Sassafras sneaked into and maybe laid a couple eggs. She is sitting that nest and will not come out.
Today I put the food right under her nose and she ate some of it. She sure is determined to sit on those eggs. I am glad she went broody because she just kept laying eggs and I did not want to lose her due to not enough calcium in her bones..... I made sure to keep her feed right outsid her nest right next to it to keep her eating. There is water in there if she wants to get up for a few to get a drink. Boy she has the nest all built really nice around her and made a pretty high one at that. Now she has plucked feathers from her breast to add to the nest. So I have her locked in a pen by herself so she has peace....

With all this snow and it melting and then more snow my pens are a total mess!!! No matter how much pine shavings and straw you put in it gets muddy. My poor powder puff sebbies look like mud balls.

I hope today I can get it some what dryer with pine shavings and straw...... That is the only bad part of natural dirt bottoms MUD! YUCK stinky too.
