Minx,if you weighed the egg before incubation it should lose between 11-13% of it's initial weight. The airsack will begin to elongate and grow larger too the last few days. If your holding the egg level,pointy end left,.big end right and use a high lumen led flashlite the airsack will change from being at the very top about the size of a dime,to a left-right fashion resembling a wave of water. If you use a 4500 lumen flashlite you can see thru a marans eggshell

Unfortunately I didn't weigh it, although I might have an egg the same size that I could weigh. It does feel lighter when I pick it up to turn it. So using a very bright light won't hurt the chick? I get worried using the candler because it gets hot and I don't want to heat up the egg too much. So I am guessing marans have thick eggs? I always wondered how people see into emu, ostrich, or rhea eggs (or maybe they don't)... My dad just bought a big spotlight tonight maybe I could use that. I think a bunch of our flashlights are lame...Wait I could use my coon hunting light!!!

If what you're using to candle heats up that could kill the egg. Best to use one that doesn't heat up.

I love your brooder how long do you keep the wee peas in there before they go to your outside chick pen?

As soon as it dries out i will open the door and let them out, they will go in and out threw the day and will go in at night so i can shut the door till they are big enough to roost .
