2015 August hatch-a-long!!

Oh that's great!! They'll sure appreciate it!

. I had one that took all day too. It's hard to not interfere. I know.... Usually it's best, though. It hatched on its own and is doing wonderfully! I've also heard that the pip,zip and hatch is like their first real life test,if you would. And that if they cannot do it without getting really tired that they may be weak to begin with. And that assisting them can actually hinder them later on. Now,although that does make sense,I'll be the first to admit I've helped!!!! I can't help it. It's like my maternal instinct kicks in and my young need me! How can I just stand by? But like earlier posted.... The person that does not help and it's due to this very reason. I'd say,be patient,my dear! It'll happen in due time. The Lords timing is Perfect!!!

Hi, I haven't interfered even though it is tempting. Maybe you can answer a question for me since you have much more experience than me at this.. Should I be worried about adding these new chicks that are hatching now with the ones that hatched 1+ days ago? I don't want the new ones to get picked on and I also have a few more due this weekend and would like to be able to put them all in the same brooder once they dry up from the bator. (only have one heat lamp and such) Let me know what you think on this issue. Thanks again for being here with me on the journey. great to have all the help you have given me.

Sorry to hear about the hens rejecting certain breed chicks!  I think I'd make her a hood and see if the smell alone is different or just the sight of them sets her off.

As to the cedar or red colored chips in the shavings, I had heard that cedar was toxic to chicks and I only use pine shavings.

I'm not going to let her hatch anymore. It's just too risky. So many chicks lost due to her "pickiness"!!! She's a great mom to her one chick. That's all she gets! Thank you for responding in regards to the cedar being bad for the birds. I know it helped.

I had a single jubilee and a single lavender hatch 2 days apart and put them in the brooder together with no issues.

um... I added a newborn chick in with one that was a day and a half older. At first, the older one kinda checked out the younger. She did lightly peck at her beak a few times. Nothing harsh. And within a few minutes, they were bestes buds!!! I honestly don't think you should be worried. Maybe at first, sit and watch for a bit. Just to make sure everyone settles in nicely. And I betcha by evening, they'll all be huddled together,in a corner, like they don't know the difference! Keep me posted? You are very welcome!!! Glad to be of help....when I can. I'm still a baby myself in the "chicken world!"

Hey there! What's the "Dalmatian" all about? Is it like the spots on a dog? It sounds really neat! My bantam chicks are super adorable!!!! Good luck on your new creation. I'll pray that you have success!

Thanks.

Dalmatian Bantams (different from the Dalmatian Chickens from Europe) are a fun experiment I'm working with. Here's a picture.

Goldie, one of my original two Dalmatians

Dastan, my only Dalmatian rooster (he's grown up now) that I have at this point. I had two others, but they fought too much (sebrights and OEGB are in their genetics, both aggressive breeds. Hopefully the silkie in there will dampen that).

(the first pic, she's a lot bigger than my bantams. I believe my roo is an English game bantam. I think she's just a bantam. I'm not exactly sure. I can send pics and maybe you could help me out?)
