2015 August hatch-a-long!!

Sunny pj- this is my second and a half batch. First was in the incubator the next under a chicken hen and the hatched at the last moment in the incubator. But , yes, I'm excited! So cool to watch the process. I now have 4 pipped and I can hear peeping. Love it! I talk to them for encouragement. I would think that the DH would think I'm nuts but he does it too. :D

HI, I tried to do like some of the threads suggested and help ease the yolk sac back in but no luck. Just when I thought I was making progress he would chirp and push it back out. I was able to get everything back there cleaned out better and he pooped on me right away but still looks scary with that blob and it almost looks like a little bit of intestines with it. sorry to be so graphic. I have been giving him water periodically and he is chirping really loud and still making his way around. He has really long legs and feet for his size so I wonder if maybe he did some damage inside the egg with all that in there. He isn't even fluffing up at all. We can't believe he has made it this long!
Oh my goodness. If that was my chick I would probably tape a big bandage on his belly with some ointment and hope for the best. It sounds like it's full of life. I have been amazed at what kind of injuries animals can survive!

sunny, after reading your last explanation of what is going on, I can say that I have had these little stinkers too. I've only been hatching four 4 yrs. soo, have seen many things, and helped a few. :p So, what I do, is pinch the navel area shut after pushing that back in, and hold it...for a long while! I used Neo on it though, a lot!

Thanks - I took out four. So if he passes the other isn't left alone. Hopefully these will be handled much more and be more tame than the ones I have.
Another question- his legs seem ok, he can stand up but it seems he lays a lot, sometimes hops with his wings out. He is much smaller than the others. When I cleaned the nest before vacation there was one chick piping and that was about 3 days after the rest. Is it possible he's just much younger? Or could damage of been done if he had gotten chilled while piping? Thanks all.

I'm glad he seems to be doing pretty well. He may be younger then the others, but leg problems are fairly common in hatching chicks, which could be why it took him so long to hatch in the first place. He may have been in the wrong position also or just be genetically weaker. Hopefully with some special care and a healthy diet he will get past all these complications though.

Just beautiful! I'm now wondering if the gray babies that my hen was killing belonged to my Black Austrolorp. I thought they were my Barred Rocks babies. Hmmmmm not too sure now. Congratulations mama!!!

Barred chicks will have a yellow dot on top of their heads. Did any of your chicks have the dot? But I guess it's also possible the eggs could have come from both your Barred Rock and Australorp.
